nope, because you wouldnt be able to lock it for your xbox without the eeprom,

you'll either need to build a eeprom reader, or borrow a modchip. and if your doing that, you might as well get a bigger drive as well.

Yes you can make an eeprom reader, there is a tutorial somewhere on this board floating around.

No buy either

1) a mod chip and new hard drive (see note2)

2) an eeprom reader and new hard drive (see note2)

3) or motherboard+harddrive (HD must be locked with that motherboards eeprom info) (see note1 and note2)

note, if buying a new motherboard make sure your current power supply is ok for that board

note2, if buying a large non-standard xbox hard make sure it is compatable, there is a list somewhere (search)

This I think covers all your options. unlocked drives need a mod chip to use on xbox and locked ones must be locked with the info/key of the motherboard it's attached to for use with a softmod/retail

That looks ok.. note the message at the top of the page if you have a 1.6 board. I have no idea how to use it but I would imagine it comes with instructions.

But it's probably cheaper if you have a compatable psu (i know the 1.0 xbox has a different psu connector but i don't know anything about other xbox revisions) to get the motherboard/hard drive bundle you referenced earlier. As buying the reader+parallel cable+Hard Drive might be more costly unless you want a big HD.

I also thought of a new option...

4) Maybe you could hard wire the HD you have now somehow if you have any soldering skills. You would only need to do the 3 you broke. If you manage to do this make it your priority to get the eeprom.bin file to your PC via FTP.

I was wondering what if he bought a replacement HDD that was an identical model to the one in his Xbox now & swapped the electronics from the replacement to the original one? Is the eeprom stored within the electronics or is it encoded on to the platters themselves??

BTW Broken pins CAN be replaced if you have a good steady hand with a soldering iron (I have done it a cuple times) all you need is a drive that you are willing to sacrifice to save your box
