Frequently Used Softmod Terms
« on: February 15, 2006, 10:34:00 AM »

Since there is alot of info out there people often get confused by the different terms used in the softmodding scene. This results in no-sense posting and misunderstanding. I will try to make a list in alphabetical order explaining each term shortly. If you have usefull terms you would like to see added just post in the topic or PM me with it.

Agent Under Fire/007 Exploit - Name of the gamesave exploit for 007 Agent Under Fire. This means the gamesave of this game is hacked to launch unofficial code. There are MANY different Packages using this Exploit each with their own possibilities. Saying you used this exploit explains as close to nothing. If you want to get help provide the FULL name of the PACKAGE you used.

Coldbooting discs - Technique used to bypass the exploit. When xbox is turned on with a retail game inside the softmod is not triggered since the disc loads prior to the exploited xbe. In this state it is safe to use xbox LIVE.

Dualbooting - A piece of code used in the bootup that will look at the tray state and load different xbe files depending on it's state. (like to msdash with eject button and evox with power button))

EEPROM - Chip on the mainboard that contains UNIQUE information (like the hd unlocking key) about that particular xbox. It is important to backup the eeprom ASAP as it can save you from buying a modchip or hotswapping when something goes wrong.

Exploit - Part of a softmod that patches the bios to launch unofficial code.

Flashing - Term used to describe the process of replacing/putting data on a fysical chip. This has NOTHING to do with softmods. With softmods the fysical chips remain intact and only stuff in MEMORY is changed.

Hotswapping - Technique to acces a hdd by letting the xbox unlock it and then swap out ide cables. Having the eeprom backup is NOT required to do this. It may however be harmfull to your hdd/xbox.

Kernel - Another word for bios. You cannot upgrade this using softmods. (And there is no need to do so)

Mechassault/MA Exploit - Name of the gamesave exploit for Mechassault. This means the gamesave of this game is hacked to launch unofficial code. There are MANY different Packages using this Exploit each with their own possibilities. Saying you used this exploit explains as close to nothing. If you want to get help provide the FULL name of the PACKAGE you used.

Ndure - Name of the most recent XBE exploit. This just a small part of a complete softmod. It is NOT the name of an Installer or package.

Nkpatcher - Name of the part of a softmod that patches the kernel to add all kinds of features and disables security. This app is the current most popular tool to do this and supersedes the use of a bios loader.

Phoenix Bios Loader/PBL - Name of an app that replaces the bios in memory. In a normal softmod environment this app is obsolete and Nkpatcher is prefered.

Softmod - Normally used to describe the combination of tools used to get your xbox in a modded state using software only.

Splinter Cell/SC Exploit - Name of the gamesave exploit for Splinter Cell. This means the gamesave of this game is hacked to launch unofficial code. There are MANY different Packages using this Exploit each with their own possibilities. Saying you used this exploit explains as close to nothing. If you want to get help provide the FULL name of the PACKAGE you used.

UXE - Name of XBE exploit.  This just a small part of a complete softmod. It is NOT the name of an Installer or package.

Virtual C - Name of a Nkpatcher feature. This virtually replaces your C directory to protect it's contents. This is ONLY active in a MODDED state and has NOTHING to do with Xbox LIVE.

Virtual EEPROM - Name of a Nkpatcher feature. This redirects alterations of the eeprom to an image. This to protect your vital eeprom.

Great idea Krayzie  tongue.gif  Might want to add exactly what the eeprom does and why it is important to backup as well as what coldbooting is.  I know that they are not really part of the "softmod", but are important terms used in softmodding.

Good catch. I wrote the list in like 10 minutes so I can use ideas like this. Eeprom, coldbooting and hotswapping added.
