After a few (around 4 or 5) hotswap tries, error 09 appears right before white M$ logo.
the jumper is still there.
what can i do w/ it? I haven't finished hotswap and mod yet.
any suggestions are appreciated.

I have the same problem. I got my xb hard disk drive junked without backing up it's eeprom. What should i do now?

I'm also getting an Error 9 after several attempts at HD swapping.  The harddrive is no longer recognized by my PC anymore.  Could swapping the IDE cable out while its running kill it this bad?

Unfortunately, this is my first attempt at softmodding and I dont have the EEPROM yet.  And correct me if I am wrong, without that EEPROM, I won't be able to build another hard drive that will work in my XBOX.

Could someone confirm that before I go out and purchase another XBOX?  thanks!

YES repeated hotswap attempts can physically kill the drive.

Without your EEPROM, you will either need to build a EEPROM reader, or you will need to borrow a chip before buying another hd.

Where do I go to get instructions on how to build an EEPROM reader?  When you say borrow a chip, are you meaning a mod chip or EEPROM chip?

My HDD is not detected by the bios, but it's detected by atapw tool, altough i don't know how to get eeprom key back....

I am sorry to revive a 3 year old topic but I share the same problem as the original poster. I've read A LOT ot material on the subject and it seems that even today the only way is to use an EEPROM reader. Am I right? I also have an old dead xbox (v1.6), can I use that EEPROM chip in anyway to revive my current xbox (v1.3)? Thanks.

edit: What about cyd0g's hyperterminal solution? Will that work?

After unlocking it, you still have to lock it back for softmod to work. I personally feel the eeprom reader by unicron is simpler to build. 1.6's eeprom can't be reused on lower versions of xbox and desoldering eeproms is not easy. There's another solution other than the eeprom reader - a modchip.

What struck me last night is that even if I manage to extract my EEPROM with the reader I still cant get my PC to detect my drive. I've tried both xboxhdm and MHDD. Maybe when I choose option3 in xboxhdm (lock/unlock) it wont need to detect the drive?

On that note - once I have my EEPROM can I use it to lock an all together different drive that has never been inside an xbox? I've set up a drive with original MSDASH 5960 (using xboxhdm) but it comes up with the "drive is unlocked" service error. I want to use that drive.
