Actually, You really dont need either floppy drive or modchip. But what you will need is an eeprom backup, and lockable hard drive. The eeprom is used so you can lock the new hard drive to your xbox so you can run the softmod on the xbox. As well it also depends on how large hard drive you put in it as to what all in all you might need extra. But, if you get a modchip and really dont play on live you can go with any standard EIDE hard drive. The floppy is recommended but not necessary. Hope this helps and any more questions you can ask, dont feel like your bothering anyone, thats what we are here for, to help you.

whoops... i didnt realize that Textbook already had instructions on how to upgrade the HDD in this very thread...

QUOTE

1. Backup your xbox's entire C and E drives to the computer.

2. Extract a SlaYer's disc or use a full, retail C backup for /xboxhdm/linux/C. This should be a completely stock C drive, nothing changed.

3. You will only need to add the UDATA and TDATA directories from your E Backup to the /xboxhdm/linux/E. You may want to add the apps folder, but remember the more you put in here, the more space it will take up and it may not fit all on one CD.

4. Place the eeprom.bin backup file in /xboxhdm/linux/eeprom.

5. Make the ISO and burn it with whatever program you used before.

6. Since the new hard drive is unlocked, all you have to do is hook it up in your computer (no hotswapping or anything like that). Boot up XboxHDM, choose option 1, and type 'xboxhd'

7. You will want to create an Xbox partition table and then format it. After the format, it will ask if you want to copy files to the C and E drives (say Yes).

8. Reboot your computer and this time choose option 1 and type 'softmod'. You will have to softmod the hard drive again as you did before.

9. Reboot yet again one final time and this time choose option 3 at the main menu. Type 'lockhd -a' and it should lock the hard drive.

10. Now all you have to do is put it in your Xbox.

some parts i dont get...

step 2, i cant use my backup of C?  so i have to go download this slayers guys c backup?

i still cant find my eeprom.bin... i dont know where to look for it... i ran BACKUP and i still cant find it anywhere

Then, after that's all good, download Qwix and use it to create an ISO from local folder. Then, use Nero or a similar burning program to burn the ISO image to a DVD-R or CD-RW.

i don't know what i'm doing wrong, but it's not working... the error 21 still comes up

i created an ISO file with qwix and burnt the image with alcohol 120%. i just named the file "Dash" (also tried "dashboard"). i don't even know if it's relavent. can the xbox actually find default.xbe file in the folder (within the image file)? also, for some reason the burnt cd-rw with the image file shows as having its full space (702mb of 702mb). how is this possible if i burnt an image to it? i'm just shooting darts here because i don't know what i did wrong.

If you have a backup of your C from when it was a clean, up to date dash, you can use that rather than downloading Slayers.

I can't give you any better instructions.  Create a new folder (doesn't matter what the name is) and directly inside that folder should be a default.xbe and the evox.ini.  Use Qwix to Create the XISO and burn the ISO with anything.  That's about it.  Unfortunately, the Xbox has trouble reading media.

IPB Image

Find out your DVD drive, and then compare it to the chart on This Xbox Linux Page.  Burn it to compatible media and if it still doesn't work, there is a problem.  If you have a Thomson, I'm afraid DVD is the only way to go.  Very few people get a Thomson to read even a CD-RW.

not sure what an XISO is. there's only one button to create an ISO ("Create ISO"). do you think that the fact that my CDs show as having nothing in it when i use explorer has anything to do with it?

i'm gonna try again... this time i'm gonna use a work computer. i hope i don't get caught lol

Textbook, thanks for the tutorial, I am sorry to say I have tried this but I am now getting an 06 error when I boot up my xbox. I noticed there was no way to backup the eeprom in your options. Looking for some help see if my xbox is a paper weight or not. I had a samsung drive which I had to firmware to unlock. I think I might need to extract the eeprom data some how and change the password but its like the drive will not let me change the password. Any help is appriciated.

thanks.

Error Code 06 means your hard drive is locked to an incorrect EEPROM.  A locked hard drive will only boot in an Xbox with that EEPROM, because the hard drive is matched to that particular EEPROM.  Plug the hard drive back into your computer, boot up XboxHDM, and choose the option that says Boot To DOS With HD Unlock Tools.  You will see a whole lot of scrolling text and "cyberaction" going on.  Just wait until everything stops moving.  You should see an A:> or something like that with a flashing cursor.  Type:

atapwd

(and hit enter)  This will bring up the hard drive unlock tool.  Now do the following:

1.  Choose your drive (the top one is primary master)
2.  Choose Security Command Set
3.  Unlock With Master Password
4.  Type "XBOXSCENE" without the quotes (and I think it's case sensitive, so xboxscene won't work)
5.  Choose your hard drive again.
6.  Choose Security Command Set (again)
7.  Choose Disable With Master Password
8.  Type "XBOXSCENE" without the quotes (case sensitive, make sure it's CAPS)

The hard drive is now unlocked.

Now, use the correct EEPROM backup and lock the hard drive to that EEPROM and it should work.

My tutorial was aimed for people just like you.  People who don't know too much about modding the Xbox.  Glad it worked out for you, and it wasn't hard work making the tutorial.  I congratulate the important people.  Of course, I appreciate the "thanks" though.  The way I see it is...I'm getting more people into the world of Xbox modding.  Whether it's for that person who rarely uses it more than a few times a month, or for that hardcore person who really wants to know more about it, everybody can appreciate the power a modded Xbox has over a normal one.  I didn't enter this scene when it started.  Most of my friends had modded Xboxes before I had any Xbox at all.  I got it done by somebody else, because I had no idea how to do it.  I learned after seeing my friend mod my Xbox for me, I was curious.  Now that I look back on it, I probably could have done it myself.  Hopefully, people who don't have any clue where to start can find what they need with this tutorial as well as any others here in the scene.  Glad you tried it, and hope you stick around.  There's a lot more to learn about your Xbox now that it's modded.  Like....

uhh.gif get rid of that awful EvoX
uhh.gif Download some cool apps from the usual place
uhh.gif learn how the Xbox works, learn how the mods work
uhh.gif most importantly, have fun, and if you're going to mess with your Xbox, always have backups

I'd like to thank Textbook. I used his tutorial last night and it worked with minor hickups (I had to use option 2 on the first menu, as the VGA option 1 would lock up my computer). After I figured that out everything else went perfect. I booted up my XBox in EvoX's dashboard and made sure it was working. Then I made a backup, FTP'd the E:\Dash directory to my HD (in the Dash/Backup is my eeprom.bin).

I replaced my E:\Dash folder with the contents of XBMC and it successfully boots into XBMC everytime. Now here's where I'm stuck. If someone could please answer a few questions for me, I'd appreciate it. I've searched thru this forum, Google and many other places and haven't figured out these answers yet. So here goes:

1) I can't modify or add any files to the C Drive. This vexed me while I was trying to figure out how to get XBMC as my default dashboard (I read tons of places that said to place a file named evoxdash.xbe in the main C drive to do it, but I'd always get a "failing to open file" when I tried to FTP to there). Somehow I stumbled on a website that explained to replace the E:\Dash folders contents and XBMC would be my default.

2) I can't modify any MS Dashboard settings and expect them to save correctly. Once I reboot, all settings that were changed revert back to their default states (e.g. resolution, timezone, etc.). I figure it has something to do with my first problem above.

3) I don't know how to get a boot disc working correctly. I used SimpleX to create an ISO of the Dash folder I downloaded off the E: drive. So the contents of the ISO are:

\default.xbe
\evox.ini
\Skins\Project Mayhem\* (all the ones I downloaded)
\backup\* (4 bin files and 1 txt, to include the eeprom.bin)

I use SimpleX to extract the ISO to make sure that it is layed out correctly (it is). Once I place it in my XBox and boot, it boots to the XBMC Dashboard instead though. So I'm doing something wrong.

So if any of you could stand to help me, I'd appreciate it. I just want to make a backup boot disc for emergencies and also be able to edit the MS Dashboard settings.

Another happy client here!
I've already change the disc to a 160 Gb, and it's running perfectly.
