sorry, maybe i wasn't too clear in my previous post.
ok, my understanding is that the nk patcher writes the bios into the RAM upon the boot upon each bootup. therefore, when the xbox is loading the title screen, it's not modded and when the error 21 screen comes up, it's still not modded. what you're saying is that it's already modded and the lack of proper dash files is causing the error 21. so i JUST need a boot disc (slayers?). is this true?
also, just to add, shouldn't i be able to boot dvds (regular or copied) without the dongle if my xbox was in the softmodded state? this is not the case for me and it still goes into error 21. only retail games can run which again, leads me to believe that my xbox is not softmodded.
ok so provided that my system is still modded when i see the error 21, i just have to download slayer's disc and do what from there? i've never used slayers...
can someone shoot me a link IF it's actually my solution? thanks!
Believe me, your xbox is still softmodded if everything you said before is true. The only thing that you deleted was in E:/Dashboard, the default "modded" dashboard. Think of it like this:
Xbox boots up and the retail BIOS looks for a MS-signed original retail game disc.
It doesn't find it, so it goes to the Xbox dashboard.
In the case of a softmod, the user never even sees that step, because we patched it. Instead of loading C:/xboxdash.xbe, it loads this:
ANY default.xbe in the dvd drive, signed or not (Movie DVDs don't have a default.xbe, hence the reason why they don't load)
If it can't find that, then it loads E:/Dashboard/default.xbe.
In simpler terms:
-Retail Signed Default.xbe from DVD drive
(softmod loads)
-Any default.xbe from the DVD drive
-E:/Dashboard/default.xbe
That's the order.
So, you can use either a SlaYer's disc downloaded from the usual place, or make your own boot disc. Personally, I would recommend making your own boot disc. Why? A couple reasons. SlaYer's is a large download (+100MB) and will take a long time to download. And nobody should ever use SlaYer's with a softmod, it's dangerous if the user doesn't know what they are doing.
By all means, if you don't want to learn something new, go ahead and download the SlaYer's disc, but only use it for this, and don't choose any options when the disc loads on your Xbox or you could delete your softmod.
But if you don't have the fastest internet or don't feel like waiting for the large download over bittorrent, here's how to make your own bootdisc.
Begin Mini-TutorialGet on the usual places and go to /XBOX/Applications/Dashboards/ and enter the folder of any popular dashboard (EvoX, UnleashX, Avalaunch). Download the .rar file and then extract it on your computer. I'll give you instructions for Evox, but it's basically the same for the other two dashes. Avalaunch uses an avalaunch.xml and UnleashX uses a config.xml.
EvoxFirst, please make sure the .XBE is named default.xbe or it will not boot. I can't remember if it comes already named default.xbe or if it comes named evoxdash.xbe, so check this and rename it to default.xbe. Then, you need to edit the evox.ini file in notepad. Use
Chefelf's Networking Guide to edit your evox.ini accordingly.
If you're using a crossover cable and need help setting up your computer's network settings, here is how to do that. (Skip if you're using a router or hub/switch to network your xbox to your computer)
Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections (if in category view) > Network Connections
Right-Click on
Local Area Connection and select properties. Highlight the last item in the list titled
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and hit properties again.
Basically, make sure the .xbe is named default.xbe and the configuration file (evox.ini / avalaunch.xml / config.xml) are set up so that you can connect to it. Put these two files and any skins or whatever it came with inside a new folder.
Then, after that's all good, download
Qwix and use it to create an ISO from local folder. Then, use Nero or a similar burning program to burn the ISO image to a DVD-R or CD-RW.
End Mini-TutorialSo... either way, you've got a boot disc and you've burned it onto compatible media. Simply put the disc in your drive, turn off your xbox and boot it back up with your burned bootdisc already in it (this process is called coldbooting, just in case if you have heard the term before) Your dash should boot. Just FTP in to the IP displayed on screen.
Server/URL:
whatever your xbox ip isPort: 21
User name: xbox
Password: xbox
Then, upload your dash to the E:/Dashboard/ folder. Remember, there has to be a default.xbe and a configuration file. Anything else can also be put in there, but it's not the "Absolutely necessary" ones needed for it to work.
