Modding Made Easy Tutorials:
A FULL detailed guide on using Xboxhdm

Disclaimer: First off, this is a series of tutorials, Modding Made Easy Tutorials. And, I am in no way, responsible for anything that could or may happen to your xbox while softmodding. This is not to scare you, but I don’t want to be liable.

Welcome.  This tutorial offers a simple 10 step guide and may be useful if your xbox has error screens such as 21, 06, 05, etc.

BUT, before we proceed, open up your xbox and find out if your xbox harddrive is lockable or not, by clicking this link:here  it might take 30 seconds to load.  If your hdd is lockable, proceed.

Step number uno!
Obtain these tools:
Xbox HDM 1.9

And if you want to restore your C:, you need these three things:

Slayers Auto Installer 2.6
LiveInfo Beta 2
xISO

These tools can be found in the usual places or x-scene.com

Moving on to step 2

Once these programs are obtained, you need to extract Xbox hdm.
These icons will be inside:
1. linux ( folder )
2. cygwin1.dll
3. make-DOS-floppy.bat
4. make-iso-lin.sh
5. make-iso-win.bat
6. mkisofs.exe
7. rawrite.exe
and some other readme's, but keep them.

Step 3

Do a quick windows hotswap to get your eeprom using LiveInfo Beta 2.
So right click my computer, properties, system management, device manager, disk drives.  Now unplug your CD ROM drive IDE cable to your xbox drive.  Then hit scan for hardware changes on your computer.  Once it finds it, DONT RIGHT CLICK ON ANYTHING.  Windows has a tendency to crash.  Then open LiveInfo Beta 2.exe and make sure to switch the hdd drive at the bottom.  Then hit save as .BIN.  That will save your eeprom.  Save it in the Linux>eeprom folder.

Step 4
Extract the AutoInstaller using the code from the home page of Slayers.  After its done, extract it again using xISO, or a program that will allow you to open xboxiso files.  Once you use xISO, take the slayers files and put them in the Linux>C folder
and make sure you get your eeprom and put that in your eeprom folder.
A simple rescue disk will have these files in the Linux>C folder:

AUDIO
FONTS
XBOXDASHDATA.185EAD00
XODASH
XBOX.XTF
XBOX_BOOK.XTF
XBOXDASH.XBE

After that's done, and everything is in the correct folder, click "make-win-iso.bat" and when its finished, burn that directly to a cd-r using nero or alcohol 120.

NOTE: I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE THE CORRECT EEPROM IN THE EEPROM FOLDER TO UNLOCK AND LOCK YOUR HDD.  THIS IS SERIOUS BUISINESS!

Step 5
The hotswap.  Ok, boot up your pc, then right before it boots to the IDE detection thingy hit the pause-break key about 3 times.  Then when it stops, put in the a blank floppy and the xboxhdm disc you made.  (NOTE: If your computer doesn’t read the disc or you don’t reach the xbox hdm screen, you either made the disc wrong or you have to change your computers bios settings to boot from the D:\ first then the A:\ then the C:\.  You can do this by booting up, and hitting the delete key or F1 or whatever key it is, it will say at the bottom of the screen, and it will take you to a menu.  From there, go to bios, then its self explanatory.  Don’t forget to save it on the way out! Reboot then.) Ok, boot up your pc, then right before it boots to the IDE detection thingy hit the pause-break key about 3 times.  Then when it stops, put in the a blank floppy and the xboxhdm disc you made Take your computers hdd ide cable, unplug it.  Boot up the xbox at this point and right before it hits the error screen, unplug its hdd ide cable and plug your computers ide into the xbox’s.  Then hit the space bar on the computer to resume detecting the IDE drives.  If it takes longer than a minute something has gone wrong and just hit the reboot button on your pc and leave all the cables connected.  Once you hit the xbox hdm screen, BINGO!

Step 6
Xbox HDM.  Now it says “XBOX HD MAKER”  Boot to option 3 (Boot Linux with Locking/Unlocking utilities) Punch that sucker in, (type in 3).

Step 7
Now your at the screen, type “unlockhd”.  Then since your eeprom is on the cd, then type “unlockhd –a”  then it should say something like “Command Completed Successfully” At this juncture, write down all of those numbers on a piece of paper and keep it handy.  Next, reboot the computer.

Step 8
Boot into option 1.  Then wait for it to load.  Once at the screen, type “xboxhd” to start the program.  After doing so, make sure your xbox drive is on the Primary Master IDE and it will say the drive and model number in HDM.  Hit yes if it’s the right drive.  Then go to option 6.  Copy down all of that on paper just to be safe.  Then go to option 7 and create a dos floppy.  After that’s done, go to rebuild C partition and it will guide you through the process.  If you want to wipe the whole partition, then hit the wipe fatx partition.  BUT, make sure you rebuild from scratch after that.  When your all finished, continue to step 9.

Step 9
Locking your hdd is serious business.  To lock your hdd, go back to option 3 (boot Linux with locking and unlocking utilities)  and type “lockhd”.  Then type “lockhd –a”  and it should say “Command Completed Successfully”  Then you can turn off your computer.  Then turn off the xbox and reconnect all cables.

Step 10
Turn on your xbox and watch it work!

Really, you dont need to open your xbox to see if your hd is lockable, a stock xbox is always locked. you need to check aftermarket hard drives for locking ability.

LiveInfo Beta 2

Beta 3 is available

stock xbox's come with retail dash's so this isnt required.

I would recommend doing more homework before writing a tutorial.. Xiso is a outdated tool, you should replace it with craxtion/quix or something like that.

you dont set your bios to boot from D/C/A, you set it to boot from cd. your drive named might not match with others.

Well those folders are required in the Linux>C folder IF YOU WANT A MINIMAL RESCUE CD!!! If you read the tutorial right, you could understand that. Sry bout that, you want to boot from cd.  But thats what i meant.  D drive = CD for me.  And i used Xiso and had no problems with it, and its simple to use.  I couldn't find Beta 3 anywhere, I could only find Beta 2.  Either one works.  I thought having your eeprom first from a windows hotswap would be good so then you could do the auto unlock in hdm.

Make your own topic instead of posting this in random ones. You'll most likely get better help that way.

Short attempt at help: Get Slayer's Evox installer. It should have all the files you need.

This tutorial should be move to the bin, its a safety hazard and will result in a fucked up box, the writer could not even get his own xbox fixed after doing this and had to resort to chipping..  Just so you know.
