Cannot Lock Hard Drive
« on: July 21, 2005, 02:57:00 AM »

Before tonight, I could unlock and lock my xbox HDD by simply booting with my xboxhd CD and running lockhd -a. Well, I decided to upgrade my HDD (using Kingroach's softmod btw) and all seemed to go fine until I attempted to lock the new drive. Whenever I run lockhd -a (have the eeprom on a floppy and my xboxhd CD) it turns on the security feature instead of locking the HDD. unlockhd -a removes the security enabled setting. The only way it will lock is using unlockx, but that doesn't use the eeprom (as far as I know) which results in error 06 when booting the xbox. Here's the really crappy part, it's doing the same thing to the original Xbox HDD so I can't even put it in without error 05 or 06 (ulockx lock). Does anybody have any suggestions? I've tried two different PC's and no luck.

BTW, the HDD is a Western Digital 120GB 7200RM and 8MB buffer.

Try 'lockhd -a' twice in a row. Have had this problem once, that did the trick. I don't remember what brand/model HDD, but I think it was a WD. (known to act up, especially the wd1600JB SE)

EDIT : just noticed your model at the bottom of the page, the WD might be the problem. WD1200JB perhaps? (those also cause trouble in some cases)

You might want to check experiences from others here : http://xboxdrives.x-pec.com/?p=&v_brand=We...on=&v_postedby=

I'll give i a shot.

Now here's another question. It's been well over two months since I initially installed the softmod. As far as I can recall, when I made the xboxhd disk, I only put the C files from slayer's installer on there. I had rebuilt the C partition, but never the E. Could this be the culprit? I wonder because when I built the drive from scratch it asks whether I want to copy files to C and E then it only copies files to C. If I remake the CD with the original E files, will that fix the problem? I just now thought of this after attempting to build the drive for the third time.

Just looked up my old post, that was on 'unlocking' though. But I guess it never hurts to try ....

I read those a few hours ago ;). That's how I actually ended up getting the "Security Enabled : Yes" problems. They did give me some viable options leading me to look at every possible reason. I'm remaking my CD to see if it's just the lack of the E: files. I certainly hope that's it. I don't care how dumb I may come off, just as long as I don't have to buy a new xbox. :P  I'll reply back in a few to let you know what's up. Thanks for the suggestions.

It won't matter if files are on e: or not. It has nothing to do with locking the hdd.

There are many reasons a hdd won't lock I'm afraid ....

* Some motherboards just don't like locking (intel chipset based)
* WD disks sometimes give trouble (for no apparent reason some lock and some don't even on same model, next time pick a maxtor, those always lock (if larger than 80 GB)

Here's some stuff you might want to try :
- Turn of autodetection of HDD's in your PC's bios.
- Try to boot the floppy, then (once booted) attach the IDE cable to the drive (powercord should be attached on startup)
- Try a different PC

And :

Someone who actually searches on the forums himself and gives a decent description of his problem never comes off dumb.  :D

Ok, finally got it to work. Obviously, the E parition wasn't the cause as you pointed out. It was apparently the security level that the unlocking tools will enable by default. It would set it to maximum everytime resulting in an error that told me it couldn't lock the drive until I disabled the security. I had disabled it about 100 time with atapwd. Every time I did though, I always used the master PW. Finally, just to see what would happen, I assigned it a user PW (second option in atapwd) and that offered me the option to set the security level at either high or max. I chose high, exited atapwd, ran lockhd then rebooted. When the floppy paused on initdisk I knew it was locked. Threw it in the xbox to see if the lock worked (unlike the one with unlockx) and it loaded evox. Only took me 8 hours to get it going :P. Thanks for your help.

Great stuff Plaster! Logical thinking always survives in the end! Good thinking.

Have fun!

EDIT:  My record of finally locking a disk clocks in at over 24 hours, lol.

24 hours? Ouch! I believe under similar circumstances, I would have massaged the drive with a ball ping hammer.  :rotfl:
