Would it be of any use for me to do a "noob test" and try to get XBL to overwrite my files even though my C is full?  I can restore easily so it's no big deal.

With the retal setup they shouldn't even try (you have the latest dash installed via the xboxdata folder) and it has been tried.. but AFAIK the exact size of free space needed isn't know (Eh pinpointed 1,3 MB or more, so less then 1 MB should be safe)

can updates only occur when using the retail setup? or would the 'basic' minimal setup allow updates as well?

No, updates need at least the "fonts" setup (thats what so "great" about ndure, the ability to have the retail, pre-live, fonts in place)

Update.xbe (used for all XBL downloads) needs the retail fonts

(@The Silent Servant: if you still want help using this installer, provide sufficient info. for folks to help you...)

@ipodder2003: I think that would definitely be worth doing with the current Ndure Installer 1.5 retail setup, since it might help some folks become aware of what can actually happen (as my various posts about it don't seem to have achieved that level of understanding)!

@total_ass & Cio: this installer pre-allocates the space so that folks don't need to concern themselves with that.  However, re. the "retail" setup, I posted additional info. earlier in this thread.  (FWIW: Ndure's "starter" setup can have any amount of free space and an optimal "fonts" setup would have less than 1.3 megs free ... this installer doesn't facilitate those setups though; they are defined in the original thread.)

Warning: the current Ndure Installer 1.5's shadowc.img implementation only works if the 'hack' directory and contents are already in it!  Closed-tray boots that currently work without that are not using ShadowC...

Ok guys, this is interesting.  I ran the troubleshooter on Halo 2 on purpose, and it tried to mess with my drive again.  My C drive is Ndure with retail setup, and filled with a big bin file and some little files to fill the drive all the way up with .01 kb free.  The update progressed a little bit and then said it failed.  I thought, oh sweet, no problem.  Wrong.  Modded state worked fine, but retail had an error.  I FTP'd onto the xbox and nothing seemed to be changed.  I just copied over the backup I had and that fixed it.  I looked at the filesizes of the dash files though, and nothing was changed.  Pretty weird.

No error code, just multilanguage screen.  The filesizes for everything seemed to be correct.  I'll do it again and check every applicable file.

Hmm. A Little BUG in the current version posted on your special website
containing the "Ndure" installer.

First off, the "ernie" file is 444 bytes long, some versions are 466 bytes
long, but from my testing the "433" byte version works the best.

Second the "path" setup in your compiled "ernie" file is wrong. You
have the "default.xbe" loading from the "HACK" directory, but the
"path" will always crash because of the format.

Currently "ernie" has this format:

'\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2;hack\default.xbe'

Which does NOT work, it should be:

'\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2\hack;default.xbe'

Notice, the CORRECT placement of the last SLASH, if loading files
from a directory, the last SLASH needs to be on the left side of
the ; which divides the FILENAME part from the PATHNAME part.

---------------

Otherwise except for this SMALL BUG which recently appeared in
the most recent posting, your installer is one SWEET BABY.

Lol, different sized ernie files? My ernie file clocks in at 452 bytes long!
All that crap added to the launch string adds size to the ernie file, people! I have no idea if I'm missing the point but isn't '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2;default.xbe' shorter than '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2\exploit\boot1;patcher.xbe'?

And yes, or at least according to DaddyJ, ''\Device\Harddisk0\Partition2\hack;default.xbe'' is correct.

I'm going to write a tutorial for this soon, noob proof.  Can someone explain to me what the benefit of the pre-live fonts is?

M$ stuff support with a retail kernel (the fonts setup allows update.xbe's to run for XBL content downloads etc, the retail setup needs the fonts to get the M$ dash to run)
