The patch only works when it detects a HDTV cable.  So if you are the one making the VGA cable, I would suggest making it HDTV and not the "standard VGA".

As far as I understood in the earlier versions of the vga-patch, the cable worked in any mode. So my intention was to modify it so that it works in both HDTV(YUV) and VGA(RGB).

Maybe you can give me some hint on the code and I'd try to figure it out myself. Only I thought for someone with more experience here it could be a lot easier.

@kingroach, I can't be 100% sure, but I believe the patch in NKP11 uses version 6 of Dr. Oldschool's VGA Patch.  Version 6 works fine in Xboxes with the Focus video encoder.  Version 6 shows reds and blacks for people with the Conexant video encoder.  Dr. Oldschool released version 7 a while ago, but many people tested it and said it did not work.  I never tested the patch because I figured they were right.  About 2 weeks ago, somebody posted saying Version 7 works great in his Conexant box, so I decided to finally test it out and it does indeed work with Conexant Xboxes.  If NKP11 still uses version 6, then it doesn't work with Conexant Xboxes.  Version 7 is now confirmed to work with both Focus and Conexant Xboxes.  Like I said, I'm not 100% sure, but I think I got everything right.  Maybe the Doc himself can answer that question.  That...or PM Xman and ask him if he used version 6 of the VGA patch in his NKP11 code.

@veeper, I think you are correct, that it does work in either VGA or HDTV mode.  I would still suggest making an HDTV VGA cable though, there is no reason not to.

Textbook - first: sorry for being a noob:
I can follow your instructions for creating the "out.xbe", but what setup is needed in the xbox for the file to work?(bios, etc.) Also, what folder in the HD should the file be FTP'ed to?

In advance - thanks for your help...

should be C:\Bios\Bios.xbe for NDURE 3.0 (the real C)
NKPatcher_U02 only has VGA6

Hello, First I wanted to thank Dr_Oldschool for all of his great work, contributions and generosity!!!  He rules. Second I was wondering if there is a easy way to turn FORCE PROGRESSIVE SCAN off while a xbox is still hooked up to the "High Definition AV Pack". Because my TV does not support progressive scan and is not a HDTV, But it does have a Component in and the picture quality using the Component in is alot better than the s-video picture. AND i would like to use the xbox on my computer Monitor somtimes as well.

yes if you uses NKP11_U03 you can use the runtime config file to to that
renaming the file when you wanted HDTV

also if you dont care about xonlinedash you could setup a dual boot with
one state progressive on with VGA the other normal HDTV settings

Sweet! Thanks for the tip. I was wondering if dual boot options would do it. The dual boot option sounds like a easier way to turn FORCE PROGRESSIVE SCAN off and on as needed.  I just softmodded without the nkpatcher progressive scan options using Ndure3. So now i gotta figure out how to setup up this dual boot.  Back to Searching. o joy

Has anyone else noticed a purple tint when running 1280x720 using SoG monitor with this latest NKPatch11 patch?

I'm using a conexant v1.0 xbox with a fresh install of Ndure 3.0 (PC version using xboxhdm) with 5960 kernel version and NKPatcher11_U03_vga7k.

The 640x480 (480p) setting has perfect color as far as I can tell, however when changing to 1280x720 (720p) colors that are normally black have a purplish tint.

I've tried flipping just about every relevant bit I could find in all of the following registers for 720p but only managed to make the colors worse.
CODE

D6 2E 32 3C 3E 40 C4 C6 CE A0 9E 9C 6C;register
0C AD 48 90 8C 8C 01 9C E1 8C 00 00 46;480p
0C AA-49 90 8C 8C 01 9C E1 21 00 00 46;720p
0C AB 49 90 8C-8C 01 9C E1 21 00 00 46;1080i

Using this http://www.conexant.com/servlets/DownloadServlet/DSH-200671-001.pdf?docid=672&revid=1 as reference.

I've tried this on several monitors all which have SoG so it shouldn't be the monitor that is causing the problem.

Has anyone else noticed this at 1280x720?  If not, could someone post some specs for systems that they have working?  Especially the xbox version, kernel, softmod version and type etc.

@Masticism, yes, that is a problem with all the current VGA BIOS/Patches.  It affects almost all monitors.  I would really like to find a solution to the problem, so if you would be willing to help out, I would really appreciate it.  Here are a few links for you:

DVADER's universal bios patcher and Foe-Hammer's explanation of the 720p purple issue

A thread I started dedicated to discussion on fixing the 720p purple tint

FrostyTheSnowman reported that his monitor works great with his homebrew mod but 3 other CRT's that he tested on were purple.  I started that thread asking why that monitor worked fine where nearly all others gave purple.  With Foe-Hammer's explanation of the cause of the problems, and looking up information on Frosty's monitor that works, you might be able to figure it out.  I know a lot of people would be happy.

Yep, 720p/1080i indeed work just fine on my Viewsonic 21" G810 CRT Monitor. I tried 3 other LCD monitors, but they all displayed purple. I would be happy to be a ginea pig if anyone needs me to do some testing. Also, I can provide a video of me switching resolutions in XBMC to prove that 720p/1080i do indeed work with their normal colors on my G810 CRT monitor, if anyone is interested.

EDIT: I really wish more people who's monitors work properly with 720p/1080i would come forth so we could create a list of compatible monitors.

Based on Foe-Hammer's analysis, I tried switching the synch modes that are normally disabled.  Bits 5:3 of register 0x2E were set to 0 to re-enable the syncs on all lines (R, G and B).  The colors appear more normal however the gamma is very low.  It's fine for bright video but darker videos (espeically movies) are difficult to distinguish especially on LCDs that do not have a decent brightness control.

A further problem, is that I noticed occasional syncing issues during some screen switches.  The monitor will lose sync and go blank or try to reaquire sync but only end up with messy patterns.

To try to compensate for the dark picture, I tried boosting MCOMPY, MCOMPU and MCOMPV (registers 0x3C, 0x3E and 0x40) which brightened the picture considerably.  However I believe because the sync signals are also carried on these lines the picture was even less stable (I tried values as high as 0xC0 with 0x80 being the default).

At this point I'm not sure what else to try.  There are some other registers that might be worth investigating but I don't have any access to them since I'm only working off of the register set provided by the 3 lines in the kernel (shown in my earlier post).

If anyone has any ideas about what other modes might be worth trying, let me know.  I have a good debug setup and would really like to get this working.

Monitors used for testing:
Viewsonic VA912b (no SoG)
Samsunc 940BW (SoG supported)
