Xbox 360 Softmod Thoughts
« on: May 13, 2005, 11:41:00 PM »

I was just wondering, if the 360 does provide backward compatibility, what are the odds that current softmods will work on that system? or atleast give us a running head start?

What about using a savegame exploit?  They (exploits) all work by causing a buffer overflow and patching the public key right? Would this still work as the memory layout is probably going to change?  Anyway, just thought some of you guys might want to toss out ideas on what some of our new hurdles will be along way with Xbox 360 softmodding.  Anyone think it might not even be possible?

Everyone have fun throwing out your opinions.

I think M$ is not stupid enough to leave the same holes open in the new system. If there's gonna be exploits they will have to gonna be new ones.

It loads shit off the HD so softmods can be done (not claiming they WILL but they can)

And current exploits wont help, they prob patched every know hole in the backwards compatibility scheme.

wasn't there talk about them using the new processors that don't allow buffer overflows? that right there kills all current softmods...

Come on guys, nearly everything M$ write has holes in or un-documented features. lol

I must admit though, there is no doubt they will be far more careful with things like font's and the hole checking of files before they are loaded. This should have been the case with the xbox but time restraints, lack of checking, over worked coders caused these bugs/exploits to slip through the net.

I would think the first step will be to hardware mod the machine first so people can access the file system and look for such things. Until then who knows, if you told someone when the first xbox's were released that you could chip it without opening it I'm sure they would have laughed in your face.

I think it might be wise to only deal with what we know, as it is way way too early to know anything. Unless anyone from M$ is here and has left us an easter egg in the dashboard. ; )

if you said that to someone now, they'd still laugh in your face, chipping involves a modchip, and as far as I know, the only way to put one in is to open it up...
only joking, I'm not that anally retentive :P

but if I remember, the rumor was that the processor would have a hardware "DEP" equivalent of XP SP2/2003 SP1 which would handle a buffer overflow.
still, the chance of an easter egg... maybe if someone doesn't care about getting fired.

SHA1 collision finder anyone?

It just seems to me that with all the stuff that you can connect to the Xbox 360 and all the stuff that you can stream/transfer that there is bound to be a way to exploit the console.  Who knows, only time will tell I guess.

My thoughts exactly - the more doors you have, the harder it is to secure.
