Hotswapping With Error 06
« on: May 08, 2005, 06:55:00 AM »

Hey guys, I am trying to fix a messed up softmod from a friend.

It all started as some kind of dashboard mess up, it wouldnt boot, seemed like a clock loop which it shouldnt have been but you never know? All I know is I wasnt getting error 21.

Anyway, I tried a hotswap using hdm, read the texts availiable as usual.

I have had the PC picked up by my PC but hdm says its locked.

Now, ive tried a LOT of times. Ive had error 9 error 7 and now the thing is stuck with error 6 basicaly it CANT unlock the drive.

Any ideas what to do next? I am pretty sure I cant get it to boot anything but errors 6, 7 and 9 which as you know wont unlock the drive so I can get in and fix the C drive.

Before you ask, no he didnt back up his EEPROM :(

OK gave it a while and no luck.

Looks like the drive is somehow now locked, but NOT locked its own Xbox?

Well, thats my theory. As neither the xbox or hdm can read it.

Thing is, I have no idea how it got locked in such a way?

Does anyone know if hdm or maybe my PC could have somehow accidently changed the drive in anyway so it can no longer be read by the xbox and make it error 06?

Did you tried to lock the hd anytime?..you can try unlocking with atapwd with XBOXSCENE..

my other guess is that since your got both error 9 and error 7, The HD is flunked.. and since it cannt even go to unlocking part, its giving an error 6.

Prob. a near-dead HD.

I got this error 6 thing once on an older seagate HD,  turned out one if the pins from the IDE connector had broken off. After resoldering the xbox could unlock the HD again.

Yeh this is what I am thinking now, the drive has died from the hotswap prodecure.

The last resort is to chip it sadly :( lucky I have one laying around from the UnleasX logo comp

If it cant read the HD then, at least I can boot a slayer CD and stick a new HD in from scratch.

Jeez, when softmods go bad eh

I would check the HD (specifically the IDE connectors) for damage first. Maybe you just broke something that can be solderd back togheter. One point is less work i figure ;)

P.S. just unscrew the circuit board so u can check it on all sides.
