Problem With Hotswapping Xbox Hdd

I'm having a problem with hotswapping... every time I unplug the IDE cable after the xbox is started, the hdd turns off for a split second and then turns back on. And then when I plug in the IDE cable from the computer, the same thing happens -- hdd turns off and then on within a split second. Very weird, I have never heard of this problem before. Can anyone help?
