My friend asked me to do a soft mod, i've done them sucesfully before, and when they failed i restored backups i made. This time i was foolish enough to try to use a new mechassault game save, to repair the dash i had broken, the game save didnt work, so now i can't ftp to his original HD. I have a spare Original hard drive, but it's an earlier version then my friend's. It won't boot of it even with his files. So what i was thinking is hotswapping to restored the files on his Xbox, but i coudn't get that working yet. So then i thought i do have FTP to the spare HD. Why not install a softmod that only alters the hard drive so he could boot of the hard drive and run a new dashboard, this would more then fix the problem. But this itself makes another problem. His xbox has the "5101" bios, which are quite new. Kernel patching seems to make softmodding work, but thats not an option for me. So what can i do as far as softmodding the spare HD then getting it to work in his Xbox?

5101 isent that new of a M$ bios..(by the way it´s the KERNEL)  i softed my with UDE1 but now there is Üxe that can take all new & old Kernels but as far as every thing else.. you have to ask some one else

Thanks for the help. The process seems simple if you analyze it. Treat my spare xbox HD as a new HD that requires to be softmodded to be ran un an un-chipped box. I think it'll all work out, but who knows.

Tried UXE works on my box, but not my friends he gets "Error 06" (kernel - Cannot unlock HDD)

"If you get an error 6, put the replacement HD and xbox HD back in your computer, unlock/disable them both (xbox hd uses hddkey.txt password, replacement HD uses LiveInfo password). Repeat steps 18-20.

Likely, though, if you got an error 6, you mistyped the Replacement HD's password. If so, check on your floppy drive. There should be a text file containing the last used key. That should help you unlock the replacement HD."

I've tried hot swapping but it doesn't like me. Windows picks up the HD under Device manager, but i've tried many windows programs for hotswapping but they just won't pick up the drive T_T

My friend's Xbox doens't report an error, it just reads MS, then is about to show the set time thing, then it reboots. This is clock loop? i'm guessing atleast.

there is no windows program.. you need to use xboxhdm.. look at my sig for xboxhdm tutorial and look ar dadyj's tutorial..

There are programs design for windows to read the fat-x drive. Wether they work or not i do not know but they're on xbox-scene....

I don't mean to be rude, but if someone who's got close to a 1000 posts to his name tells you NOT to use the windows based stuff, just don't . It's asking for trouble.

And to your last  post: swapping xbox to xbox will work, I've seen at least one post just today (by Krayzie) explaining it in less than 10 lines.

Just read every single post in in the last 30 days, and you'll know which tools and solutions are most popular/ most used / best supported etc.
