How To Backup The Eeprom.bin File From A Virgin Xb
« on: January 09, 2005, 04:29:00 PM »

I'm sure this isn't the easiest way of doing things.  But.

Well, what I finally did (yesterday) on a v1.0 box (PAL) was:

I downloaded (from #xbins) xboxhdm, and uxe-complete-v0.2

I followed the instructions in uxe-complete-v0.2 (I ran 71-fonts-install.bat and nkpatcher-06-install.bat) which generated files in uxe-c-replace.

Then I copies the entire contents of this directory to the linux/C directory of xboxhdm.

Then I ran make-iso-win.bat to generate a new linux.iso file.

I burned this image to a brand new CD.
I powered down my PC.

Then I opened up my PC and disconnected my hard drive, but left my DVD drive connected.  I booted from the brand new CD until I got the initial screen.

Then I hotswapped the Xbox disc (powered on my Xbox, waited for the initial menu, then hotswapped).

I continued the boot process on the PC.  If you get a lot of errors, chances are you didn't manage to get the disk unlocked.  (Aside: Or later when you've done it and are changing settings, and you're getting error 21 or something, this'll also happen, so the best thing to do it boot a valid game disk and wait for the game to start)

When the prompt appeared, I typed in xbrowser (I think thats the name of it - it tells you once you boot anyway)

From here, I can see the contents of the CD, with the files I placed from uxe in it's C drive, and I can also see the contents of the XBOX hard disk, including it's C drive.  So change to the Xbox drive and go to the C drive.

I moved the fonts folder to f0nts (that's a zero instead of the letter o)
I renamed everything else to the same name with an extension of .ori

So xboxdash.xbe became xboxdash.xbe.ori and so on..

Then I copied everything from the linux C drive to the Xbox hard drive.

Powered off the Xbox, reconnected the cables, and I was modded!  I could now connect the Xbox to my router, and once it connected to my DHCP server and got an IP address, I could ftp directly to the Xbox.

So, next thing to do is generate the eeprom file.  You should be running the EvolutionX dashboard.  Under one of the menus, there is an option for Backup.  This generates files on the hard drive in the C partition under fonts/dashboard/backup - these are the files you need to take back to your PC and keep safe.  Whatever you do, don't lose these.  (Actually, what I did was copy them back into the xboxhdm linux folder into the same place and burn another xboxhdm CD)

Hope that helps.  Hopefully somebody might even be able to make this even easier???

Ok that seems clear, but I want to know if its possible to get the file from a virgin Xbox without softmodding it, cause i already screwed up sometimes with UDE and UXE. So I really want to have this file before modding it, just in case something bad happens and still be able to unlock the drive with the eeprom.

if you do not have access to a gamesave exploit then it is not possible without first modding it.

dude just use uxe complete, you just delete and replace the c drive, simple as that.

Any idea which fonts I should use? The 61 or the 71 fonts, cause I am a bit confused here.

ok, I am pretty clear right now, just one last question to verify. Should de directory structure on c, be something like this:

fonts =>folder
****skin
****bert-generic.xtf
****default.xbe
****ernie.xtf
****evox.ini
****nkpatcher.xbe
xboxdash.xbe

Cause I am not too sure about that default.xbe. The linked tutorial says ex.xbe, what should it be? Anyways thanks again

for your xbox/exploit to work, you need AT LEAST THESE FILES.,which is in the complete uxe package at xbins.

fonts =>folder
****skin
****bert-generic.xtf
****ernie.xtf
****evox.ini
****ex.xbe
****nkpatcher.xbe

xboxdash.xbe (not the real xboxdash.xbe that came with your retail hd.  This is an imposter, it was update.xbe)

If you use the premade uxe package at xbins, those are the files that will be in the zip file.  ex.xbe is the real dashboard file (evolutionx).  The xboxdash.xbe is the boot file that access the fonts and the fonts call nkpatcher which is then load the dashboard (ex.xbe)

Btw, in that tutorial, it doesn't mention about ****default.xbe.  Anyway, everything you need is in the uxe package.  Keep in mind that the package that is at xbins is customerized so don't mix and match because it will very likely that you will mess up if you don't know what they are.

Also, try not to delete and replace.  I prefer to have my original files so I like to rename the files/folder and then copy over.  However, if you need your original files, you can get it from slayer cd etc.. but why create more problems for yourself when you can avoid. smile.gif

Another question popped up over here. I am planning to use uxe-complete-v0.2.bz2. In this package, there are several .bat files. I ran 71-fonts-install.bat and nkpatcher-06-install.bat. Now if I look in the directory uxe-c-replace I see that the files were copied over there.

My question is, should I use this structure on the C-drive OR should I use the one slrhsapple mentions. Does it even matter what the structure should be? Please help me, cause I want to do a good softmod this time and not ***srew up*** again... (though I was able to fix it again.) Thanks for any replies in advance.

There are paths hardcoded into the binary XTF and XBE files.  Therefore do not mix and match distributions.  If you wish to use uxe-complete-v0.2.bz2, follow the instructions that came with that distribution.
