using partition 8 is the best way IMO to use the shadow c function...shows you the cools things you can do with nkpatcher.

but if the game is cold-booted, doesn't this stop nkpatcher from getting loaded so the game will see the real C drive and could possibly mess it up with a dash update

I can't seem to get the error screen to come up at the point you said it should.  I double checked my settings and didn't find anything.  Perhaps you can check it:

%define VIRTUAL_C_DRIVE 2
; %define ACTUAL_C_DRIVE 8
%define VIRTUAL_C_PATH '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition8\shadowc.img'
; %define VIRTUAL_C_PATH '\Device\Harddisk0\Partition8\shadowc.img'

I noticed in your tutorial it only had the first 3 lines listed, was I supposed to leave the 4th line as default?

also i was gonna max out the shadow drive. make it 490-ish big. i reckon this should be plenty of space. beforehand though, i just want to make sure that there isn't any caching on the C drive or any reason why the current space used up shouldn't increase.

btw nkpatcher is extremely fast booting. i love this more than pbl now.

For what it's worth, with the shadow c: completely hidde, you  could compile nkpatcher to load the regular msdash, and play backups, right?
I have someone in mind that I would like to mod a box for but keep it "stock", ie boot to msdash as normal, and play backups only from discs. All it would take is krayzie's setup above, but compile nkpatcher to boot c:\xboxdash, correct?

Just a thought. Ftp could always be accomplished with a disc.

I cant see why not. nkpatcher is already running and has the memory modified. The only thing that I can think of that would prevent you from loading a backup disk through the msdash is that the msdash itself would see the media flag and stop its boot process.

but, I highly doubt that would be the case for the simple fact of the modchip. that does nothing to the code of the dash, just the memory....if I am not mistakin that is. I never delt with chips, just some readin on them is all.

yes, all media checks are performed by the kernel. you can boot anything from the MS dash as long as you use a methode to be able to boot unsigned code/disks

blink.gif ), not to mention that this doesnt zip down to a desired enough size to make it into an installer.

SO, I tried what I read in another post, and use hexedit to create a blank file 450MB in size (I wanted to leave some free space just in case). Well, this too was impractical, until I put it in a zip file..... a BLANK img file created by hexedit at 450MB can be zipped all the way down to around 450k!!!! now that is practical for the installer makers out there. just have unleashx, evox, whatever format it once its extracted and mounted.

I used winrar, set it in zip format with max compression, and 450MB image file compresses down nicely to ~450K.

have fun!  beerchug.gif

interesting, what apps on the xbox can extract zips/rar. i am having ftp troubles at the moment and transferring a 400 meg img file is taking me several days (i know bad isnt it.) 450k would be great.

also can i just add something i noticed yesterday. C is 499 mb ish. with fonts and nkpatcher on there is approximately 497 mb remaining. however when i goto copy a 490 mb file over, i get a 'not enough space error'. any ideas?

maybe you are confused with the bytes numer. if it shows something like 499.000.000 is doesn't meant there is 499 mb's. In fact it's a lot less since 1 kb =1024 bytes and 1 mb is 1024 kb's
