it could be. mine currently is using the edu2 (ntsc 1.6 xbox), and I only tried it once, so maybe it can cold boot a backup to begin with.

but, that kinda confuses me a bit, how can it cold boot a backup disk? doesnt the xbox look at the dvd drive first, then to the HD? If this is true, does this mean the the xbox will look at the dvd, see that its not a pressed disk, load the HD files (hacked fonts), and then look back into the dvd, then to the dash?!?!?  uhh.gif  uhh.gif  uhh.gif

So two more that have popped up since this was posted:

1.  how do you turn off a softmod?

2.  Do you need to do this EACH TIME you want to play a game?  Are all changes lost when you reboot?

PLUS...do the DVD's need to be dual layer when backing up or will DVD5's work?

Ive got a new XBOX, 5838 kernel and 5960(i think?  maybe 5969?) dash, and I want to give it a try.

Depends on the boot order in your BFM BIOS, or your NKPatcher configuration, but basicially, yes, that is exactly what and how it happens.

If you boot off an original XBOX Game, the softmod is not active.  This used to be enough to allow play on XBOX!Live, however there are now doubts about this.  If the XBL marriage theory is correct (and there are no disk scans), then this may still be the case.

GameSavs exist (ltools) to allow softmods to be installed, and completely uninstalled at will.

Bar a handfull of games, most backups of XBOX games fit on single layer DVD5s.  For some of those that don't, patches exist to remove unimportant long video cut-scenes, etc. to make them fit.   See here.  Very few (2?) can't be made to fit.

yes the only one that comes to mind is rallisport challenge 2. all others can be shrunk down to fit, or in metal gear solid 2's case, spread across two disks.

backups appear to cold boot, technically they do not, but there is no noticeable difference as the newer bios loaders, and nkpatcher i believe, are very fast in booting. a dash is not truly needed to boot games, but its good to have one anyway. if you want you can setup the shadow drive and just use the ms dash as your main dashboard.

well when scanning what is loaded in the memory, they detect the bios on the modchips. so they are both technically the same thing you are talking about.
