If you boot off an original XBOX Game, the softmod is not
active. This used to be enough to allow play on XBOX!Live, however there are now doubts about this. If the XBL
marriage theory is correct (and there are no disk scans), then this may still be the case.
GameSavs exist (ltools) to allow softmods to be installed, and completely uninstalled at will.

Bar a handfull of games, most backups of XBOX games fit on single layer DVD5s. For some of those that don't, patches exist to remove unimportant long video cut-scenes, etc. to make them fit. See
here. Very few (2?) can't be made to fit.
