What Is Locking Exactly?
« on: December 26, 2004, 01:42:00 PM »

ok, I understand that an xbox HD needs to be unlocked at boot to work, but there are some things i don't understand...

1.  Where is the password stored on the xbox? Both modded and unmodded.

2.  Is eeprom.bin on the C drive of an unmodded xbox?

3.  When is the locking password used? only at the initial lock or at every unlock.

Thanks for the help guys. This is a great forum.

What Is Locking Exactly?

Alright it breaks down like this.

In your xbox there is a physical chip, called the EEPROM.

This contains your xbox's serial # & other odd & ends needed by the xbox.

Also in the eeprom is a locking key generator. This locking key generator does some calculations against the HD model & serial, and creates a unique key. Any HD locked with this key, can be unlocked by that xbox.

Not all HD's support locking, this is a special chip the HD must support.

The eeprom.bin is a binary dump of the EEPROM chip, and using this eeprom.bin you can use programs like, XboxHDM, config magic, to generate this HD locking key.

Once you lock the HD, you never have to lock it again, unless you HD unlock & disable.
