Nkpatcher 9.0 & 10.0
« Reply #90 on: December 28, 2004, 08:56:00 PM »

More impressive work on NKpatcher. Why bother building bios images/violating copyrights (OT- important for legality of paid modders, altho I don't think anyone should pay a single $ for softmod) if you can just patch existing stuff on the fly with a 15 kb executable.

A question: how far could the patching of the Xbox partition mapping be taken. The filesystem-related routines (NtCreateFile) are all in the kernel, right? Could the Xbox HDD someday be built with a proper FS, with less fragmentation and support for extended filenames, and all calls from retail xbe's be virtualized to a map on that FS?

Lol, I have just spent like 2 hours customizing the crap outta my Nkpatcher.

Makes it tray open, its virtualized C and EEPROM to C:\Shadow1\. Tray closed, its the same but to E:\Shadow2\. Each boots its own separate EvoX dashboard so if ones corrupt the other can still boot just fine. Each EvoX dashboard also has an option to load another NKpatcher to open up the C drive, virtualize the EEPROM different, etc.

Jeeze why wait for wafflezone to come out with this stuff? Hack it together yourself, its well worth it. I mean, my Xbox is so rigged even I can't fuck it up anymore!

Edit: By the way if anyone here thinks for a shred of a second that having a retail shadowed C drive lets you go on live, this is completely false!.

GO ON XBOX LIVE WITH ANY MODIFICATIONS AND YOU WILL BE BANNED! ONCE THE EXPLOIT HAS BEEN TRIGGERED, AND THIS HAPPENS BEFORE NKPATCHER, THE XBOX IS MODIFIED AND WILL BE BANNED UNLESS YOU DO A FULL REBOOT!

I was using nkpatcher 10/7 dualboot so that I could access my real c dash. I didn't really think about just taking nkpatcher 10 and disabling the shadow c feature....good thing they don't pay me to think!

For the recovery disk, I know how to use xboxhdm and could certainly fix a drive with my pc...but can you actually just pop the cd into your xbox and work with it from there? That would certainly be a handy feature!

As for Fable...nothing is working so far and the original copy won't work either...I'm guessing that deleting the cache files caused the problem and not nkpatcher but I'm not sure why it won't just write new ones when I delete everything out of my tdata/udata....but I'll stop with that because this probably belongs in another forum area...

Thanks!

Why not jsut run a copy of nkpatcher 10 with shadow C enabled for the tray closed, and nkpatcher 10 with shadow C enabled for the tray open?  huh.gif

One thing though, how do I make sure it's actually using the virtual EEPROM and if it is, what will this protect me from? I heard it doesnt protect your EEPROM from things that are based on the linux project or even config magic?  huh.gif

Try deleting the eeprom.bin file while nkpatcher is running. If you are unable to do so it's in use. If you don't need to change any eeprom settings then just disable writing (define VIRTUAL_EEPROM, but don't put an eeprom.bin on the disk.)

ConfigMagic uses kernel system calls so it'll use the virtual eeprom not the real. Does anybody know of any Xbox-Linux based Xbox apps that modify eeprom? I don't know if there are any.

I left pbl in my skins folder (using UnleashX ) inside the shadowc.
I put a passworded entry in my unleashx menu to link to it.
That way my Actual_C is not visable/accessable by accidental use (Virtual_C run from partition8 cause I use partition6and7 for movies/games..etc ), but I can launch pbl to get back to Actual_C for general upkeep.
I found when I gave my friend his box modded with Eject as showing Actual_C and power on with no eject loads Virtual_C he krippled the xbox within 2 hours of use by accident. It was no prob for me to recover , but for him he was lost.

Since puting a password entry to launch pbl in the dash and getting rid of the eject boot he and others don't accidently screw with Actual_C.
3 days now and had no probs yet since doing it this way.
For me I prefer the eject alternate boot , for others that aren't clued in I prefer a passworded method.
But everyone their own.

Cheers

Implementing Linux ext3 (or just ext2) file system for Xbox kernel is still on my todo list. I will have to see if any of the Linux kernel code could be reused, I probably won't bother with a complete rewrite and debugging it. Xecuter keeps talking about the new feature in X3 - it might be something like this.

As far as DaddyJ saying that a new nkpatcher will be released by the time I get this one in my waffletools....well, after what rmenhal told us what is on his todo list, that's just a risk I'm willing to takeĀ  biggrin.gif

with the virtual CD/DVD drive, will I be able to ftp a dvd movie in .img format, then mount that & use avalaunch to play it? Or does it only work with .iso files?

Isn't .img the same as .iso? Just rename it to .iso so that the attacher app finds it. I haven't used avalaunch, but XBMC certainly works. Dvdx doesn't, because it uses commands that are unimplemented in nkpatcher 8-10 to read data. I've actually already implemented these commands and they will be available in the next nkpatcher release, so
dvd movies can be played from the HD with menus using dvdx. Dvd movies can be ripped and automatically sliced using the backup utility in the current drive image utils v1.0.1.

Ok I tested it out. XBMC will play it fine (minus the menus of course) Avalaunch recognised the disc but kept rebooting when trying to play. M$dash wouldnt load for whatever reason. Looks like we'll have to wait for the code in the next nkpatcher & hope dvdx can play them wink.gif
