Linking Ms Dash To Uxe
« on: December 20, 2004, 06:02:00 AM »

Hi all,

I am fairly new to modding, i have  succesfully installed uxe, on my system, pal region 4, 5101, 4920,.
It works beutifully with a much softer transition into evox than other exploits,.

I am extremely gratefull to everyone here, as I have spent countless days/weeks, in a sometimes not so quiet awe, pinned to the monitor, trying to bridge 3 years of learning into what has been an exciting 3 weeks,.

For the life of me, i can't get a link working to the msdash, I believe that i must have either a corrupted unusuable original dash.xbe or I am missing something, which i hope, is the case,

If it is possible to link to dash with uxe, then my dreams will have come true, as this is the last component, in my learning,.

My directoriy structure, is usual but I'll list it here anywayz,

C: contains only xboxdash.xbe(supplied in uxe package)
   and fonts folder(which contains nkpatcher, ex.xbe(evox), bert-ate ernie font,ini

C: fonts
---xboxdash.xbe,

I have hexedit'd  every dash, signed this, that, xft this, to no avail,
Now is there a way out of this problem,?
I have loads of similar xboxdash.xbe lying around, all various sizes, but none seem to do the trick,.
I have correctly installed the evox settings, as it locates the file, and trys to load, but then get error 21,. damn

Is there a msdash out there that i can use/download, that will work on my box, and all other boxes that will present themselves in the future,.
In detail, a  genereic msdash that will have omni reliability,.

I sincerely look forward to any info,

thanks everyone,

truxton

-2 week ago i had an old unmodded xbox, now I have a supercharged game machine packed with emm, games, and apps,
god its good! :D

-edit, also i have had to use the original fonts(book&box.xft), from another xbox, this shouldn't be a problem, but if it is, is there a solution,

Maybee there is a simple test, i could do like, remove all exploits. install what i think to be the original fonts and dash, and try and get that to work first, then move on from that,.
I know this is not an ideal situation, not having original xfonts, but with this method, if it works, every box could be modded with only the one permanent disk, that does all,

I guess without digressing 2 much,
A universal original fonts, and ms dash, am i asking 2 much?

-Also i must mention a funny story what happened to me the other day,

I totally fucked the c: drive, after some hard experimenting, and sat for days wondering what to do,
I never knew it was as easy as taking out another modded xbox, booting it up, and while turned on, replace the hardrive with my old one, then ftp'ing to my working modded xbox with the corrupt drive, and simply repairing,.

I was shocked that it worked,

A few people seem confused by this.

The M$ Dash is more than just the xboxdash.xbe - it also required all it's support files in the dashdata.???? folder, along with its fonts.  The dashdata.???? must also be the right one for the xboxdash.xbe.

Because the the filename C:\xboxdash,xbe and the C:\fonts folder are already used by UXE - you need to rename them both.
HexEdit the renamed original dashboard XBE (MSxboxdash.xbe) to look for its fonts elsewhere (e.g. c:\f0nts, or c:\font5, etc.).
Then re-sign the hexed XBE with xbedump.

So you need all of
C:\MSxboxdash.xbe
C:\f0nts
C:\dashdata.????????

in order for the M$ Dashboard to run.

Your right, i see what your getting at, one thing I have realized is that 95% of the tutorial are written by people who are strictly followly a recipe, if you will, and it seems that the the fundamental understanding of the flow of the code, is often mis-understood, They show you how, but don't tell you why,.

For me, I continuosly experiment, removing this, adding that, to try and get a smeak peek, at the core relationship, between the files, I must of seen that green screen over 100 times, in the last week, But, this helps me track the movents of the code, i would love to understand how to get the de-bug mode working, to where where the failures stem from,
There are brilliant people here, and this is what I need to know,

Thankyou Ped,
I found out in my journiys, that also you can copy a whole system director (c:) from one machine to another, and it works,.

Again, I forgot to put back in the dashdata folder, so thankyou,
So as long as the dash.xbe is from that dash data folder, everything will work,\

I will try it soon, but It is getting closer and closer, it is a slow and sometimes scary experience blindly back-engineering the software, but within a few tries, the link to the dsh has gone from error 5 to 21, to reseting the dash, to seeing the dash flick on for a second, then reset, so i feel thast i am close,

Thankyou for the last piece,.

It completes what i wanted to achieve,.,
I can now have  cd with a complete modded system, that links to the dash, that I can install on any machine, in a few minutes without any pc intervention,

I know I am just a little fish at the moment, but with help like this, and the hdm (ltools) package, the xbox answer to me know,.\

-Bought a dula dvd burner today, and again the learning curves sting was sorely felt, damn xiso, combined with a dvdrw, just wouldn't f'n burn,
YET,  B)

cheers

I probably have to heck a few finer points later,
My things to do list is to
1) understand how to direct fonts to folder,
2)  and understamd signing

Have a great night/day
