Yeah... see i tried that.  I placed the fonts from my backup into a folder called f0nts and I hex edited the orginal dash to replace all the pointers to fonts to instead go to f0nts and renamed it to MSdash.xbe and patched it with xbedump and copied it to the C:.  Then I added the following lines to my evox.ini:

MSDashBoard   = "c:\MSdash.xbe"  in [misc]

and

Item "MS Dashboard",ID_MS_Dash in the menu section.

It still gives me a 21 error.

I have a 1.6 xbox if that helps.  I *had* extra folders on this xbox when i started, i dunno if that is what is causing the problems.

xboxdashdata.17F14D00
xodash

But I have not done any live stuff at all.

The exploit is installed. You will want to edit your msdash.xbe to get your original dashboard working again. Put Idot's patcher.exe and your original msdash.xbe in a folder together. Go to cmd prompt, change dir to your folder, and run the patcher. For example if your files are in c:\patcher, type:

cd\patcher
patcher msdash.xbe -f0nts

Then name the output file msdash.xbe and put it in xbox C. Call it from Evox or other dash and it will access the f0nts folder and load as the regular MS dash. From evox.ini that looks like:

Item "MSDash","c:\msdash.xbe"

That's it, install your apps and enjoy

I have the same problem, patched it, put my original fonts in f0nts and edited the evox.ini. It only reboots and loads evo-x when I press MS dashboard. Maybe my ms dash loads its fonts from c:\ if it cannot find the specified ones?

EDIT: Solved the problem. First I thought: Is the patching correct? So I removed f0nts folder to se if I at least got an error. It worked, don't know why but now it loads the ms dash just nicely.

EDIT2: If you wan't to play a dvd movie or original game, have the disc in the drive when pressing ms dash. If you insert the disk when ms dash already loaded it skips back to Evo-x dash.

If a Dashboard can't find it's the fonts it looking for in C:\fonts, it'll next look for them in C:\.

Your success suggests wasn't finding the fonts it was looking for in C:\f0nts.

But why did it work when I removed f0nts? If it couldn't find the fonts it needed in f0nts to start with why did it find them when I removed the folder?

I guessing that you still had the pre-live Dashboard fonts on the root of C:\.  The Dashboard will fallback to using these is no C:\fonts folder is found (or C:\f0nts if hexed smile.gif ).

Was the f0nts directory empty.

It should have contained the orginal xbox fonts.

EDIT:
Real old dashs couldnt be f0nt patched, as they only looked in the root. so therefor you must bak patch them.

I am having the same problems as vw_marc (i gave him the link to see if he could fix his).  Here is my problem (taken from another thread):

I am trying to be able to access the msdashboard from evox. I renamed the original dashboard msxboxdash.xbe. I then edited the 4 occurences of f.o.n.t.s to f.0.n.t.s:

%.s.f.0.n.t.s.\.X.b.o.x.x.t.f
f.0.n.t.s.\.....H.G.G.o.t.h.i.c.M...x.t.f
y.:.\.f.0.n.t.s.\.X.b.o.x.x.t.f
y.:.\.f.0.n.t.s.\.X.b.o.x. .B.o.o.k.x.t.f

I then signed the file with the font exploit and uploaded the file to the root of the c: drive.

I have the original font files in c:/f0nts and I have evox setup in the evox.ini:

#AudioPlayer = "c:msxboxdash.xbe"
MSDashBoard = "c:msxboxdash.xbe"

Section "Root"
{
Item "MS Dashboard","c:\msxboxdash.xbe"

When i try to load the ms dashboard, it gives me the service error (error 21).  Thinking that I might have hex edited something incorrectly, I used ldots font patcher program.  It patched the 4 instances of f.o.n.t.s with f.0.n.t.s just as I had, so I signed the xbe and uploaded the file only to get the same error message again.

Does anybody know what I could've done wrong.  So far, I have heard of many instances where a hex-edit of a 4-"f.o.n.t.s" occuring dashboard file gives an error 21.  This leads me to believe that the solution proposed by many here on the forums will not work for me.  Has anyone here been able to access the ms-dash from a  "4-"f.o.n.t.s" occuring dashboard file"?  If so, please reply with how you did it.  BTW, does anybody know if a different original ms-dash file would work in my xbox?  Thanks for the help!

I am in the same boat as dadrivr... I have tried manual hex editing the xbe and patching with idots patcher.exe.  Neither works.  I have tried having the f0nts folder there (with the fonts that were in the orignal fonts folder from my backup) and having the fonts folder *and* the 'fallback' fonts in the root of c: and I have also tried just having the fonts in the root.  I have tried every combination that I can think of but still no go.

I am not an idiot... it is patched properly.  I have tried signing the xbe (i dont know if you need to do that with idots patcher.exe or not) and without signing it.

Patched four instances of f.o.n.t.s to f.0.n.t.s. It always boots to error 21.

I have a V1.6 xbox, I forgot my kernel and dash versions... i wrote them down on something but cant find it.  The mfg date is 2004-07-30 if that helps.

I have just done this with my 1.6 pal crystal no probs it took five minutes and worked like a charm. I hex edited the original xboxdash.xbe, renamed it to msdash.xbe created a f0nts folder and put the original dash fonts in there. I can't figure out what is causing the problem you are having.

Did you put the audio folder, xodash folder and the other original files (except original fonts folder and original xboxdash.xbe) back onto the c drive? This is the only thing i can think of that hasn't been mentioned in previous posts.

I put all the other original folders back in, they are part of the original dashboard otherwise how can you boot an ms dashboard that isn't complete. resigning the xbe redirects the ms dashboards path so it doesn't conflict with the exploit (i think) but i think you still need the rest of the dash folders for it to work (audio etc). Doing this worked for me so give it a try.
