I am actually having the same problem.  I can no longer FTP to my xbox.  The MS dashboard loads instead of Evox.  The only way for me to load Evox is to use a disk.  Even then, I still cannot FTP to my Xbox.  I AM able to ping it though, so I know I have the right address.  I have never had the problem before until a friend of mine tried to play the Van Helsing DVD.

If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tin

2 questions
1.) do these .xbe's link to the hd font files?
2.) could these .xbe's be used in a "homemade" dvd that will upload a hack

1. if they are like the Hulk and SW files, yes, they get fonts from hdd only.
2. upload a hack? no, at least no way has been contrived yet and i doubt there ever will be...

this sounds obvious, and maybe DUMB to some people, but i have a question.
because these xbes are launching from a DVD movie, would it be possible to grab the information that makes these xbes launchable to create our own DVD-video-launchable xbe (such as ltools) that COULD install exploits on any old unmodded xbox?

if this is not possible, please explain, because it seems doable now that we can analyze what makes these xbes bootable from DVD videos

please dont flame, just asking a question

if i were guessing.. the answer would be no beefmank, im not sure what different media flags there are, but i believe that this one must be on an original dvd... but if it will work off of a burned dvd... then we may be on to something there... but if you were talking about making our own... and it uses the standard xbe information we already know... not possible thanks to the wonderful M$ key, but if for some reason these dont have to be signed...(which i would say they do), it could be hexed to look for font files on disk, and run them from there.. then it would absolutely work... but all of those conditions must be perfect.
well.. it would all be wonderful if there was a xbe that found it's fonts in the disk and the xbe could be burned onto writeable media... something for the smart people to think on....

what about the game demos in the halo disk.. are all of those demo xbe's signed? if not it could be replaced with a hack!

QUOTE (snoozer @ Oct 21 2004, 05:16 PM)
I put in the Van Helsing DVD into my Xbox and it immediately did the auto-update.

To begin, I have been using the Retail Kernel dash for watching DVD movies.  I have a Xbox v1.4 with a Xenium ICE and running XOS 2.0.1 on it.

Back to issue.  As soon as I saw it was auto-updating, I freaked out, but there was nothign I could do, it had already started.  Dang.  It took a really long time for the loading bar to finish and then finally the menu to either play the demo or watch the movie came up.  I was able to watch the movie with no problems.

But I have a problem now.  I am unable to connect to my Xbox via FTP through a ethernet network.  When I turn on my Xbox and fire up Avalaunch, it tells me that their is no link.  Shoot!

Now what!?!  Anyway I can revive my Xbox to be able to connect to the ethernet network via my router?  The Xenium chip works just fine, I am able to boot into Avalaunch, XBMC, what have you, and the retail kernel dashboard works fine too.  The only problem is that I no longer have network capabilities, it wiped out my ethernet.  At the time it was auto-updating I had no ethernet cable hooked up, somehow I had forgotten to hook it back up from the last time.

Any help!!!  Please!  It would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am now able to FTP to my xbox.  I don't know if this has anything to do with it:  I was originally trying to FTP from a winxp pro machine which I had used several times before to do.  With this machine I was unsuccessful.  Later, I tried another machine I had that has win2k on it.  It worked fine as if nothing was ever wrong.  I simply replaced the XBEs with the Evox ones and it is working like normal again.

FYI - I used FlashFXP on both machines and was able to ping from both machines but was getting an unknown error from the winxp machine.

Hope this helps

Some of the things you mentioned were discussed in the hulk dvd thread... the xbe from these movies can be burned onto a dvd+r with a drive that supports bitsetting, and it will look just like a pressed DVD-ROM to the xbox (and all players i think). So yes we can get these files to run from writable media.  As far as signed xbe's, every xbe, big/small, demo/retail is signed by the MS private key.  If it weren't signed it wouldn't run in an umodded box.

I'm not sure they can do that legally.  If they could they probably would have tried to impliment a similar system for people running pirated versions of XP, Office, etc...

Well since we are all leasing our boxes from M$, in a sense, they do have rights to what is inside. That is different fromt eh XP comparison meaning they could be running any hardware that is not owned by M$ thus it WOULD be illegal to wipe and re-install on update. So it may not be as illegal as you think on the xbox, Ethan.

Alright, my 2 cents - a bit ago back someone said that if it could be determined how the dvd booted the xbe, then the xbe could be custom built - but we need to use a signed xbe.  2 Ideas:
1.  Could the xbe be the files needed to boot UDE2?  Then it would be signed.
2.  If you could boot any signed xbe then why not just put a real game on the dvd?  Because a signed copy of say sonic will still be signed after its coppied.

Sorry. Nope. If that were the case, we wouldn't be modding. Copying breaks the signature.

Sorry again.  Copy does not break the signature.  Both of you, please do a search for media flags.

Is the content of the dashupdate.xbe signed? I mean, would it be possible to change dashupdate.xbe in such a way that it carries our own interesting code instead of the intended update, like ude2 or uxe? Guess not...

All XBEs are signed - dashupdate.xbe is no exception.
