Emergency Situation - Hd Locked
« on: September 25, 2004, 04:25:00 AM »

I just finished modding 5 boxes using the UDE2 exploit along with ldots fine linux distro. However on my 6th I have a serious problem. I prepared a HD from scratch as I usually do. It copied C and F, then the UDE exploit fine. Then I did the lockhd -a command. It gave me an error similar to this:

HDD_something_CMD failed (Identify)

I'm not sure if that's accurate. It's close though. It might have been "IDE" and not "HDD." Anyways after it errored with this command, it appears it DID do something, but didn't finish. It apparently turned on security but did not lock the drive with the proper password. Trying to unlock brought up an error saying it wasn't locked. Trying to lock it brought up an error saying to disable security first.

So, I rebooted the machine, hoping this would clear it up. Upon reboot, the drive was locked. Unlockhd -a does not work. It just gives me the status of the drive and nothing else. I tried to unlock using an all-zero password to no avail. I also tried rebooting over and over and trying it each time. No good.

I'm scared lockhd may have messed up this drive for good. Can someone please help me? It's a BRAND NEW 160GB drive, too. Please let me know what can be done. Thanks.

Sounds strange!

However, if the tool works as intended the drive should have been locked with a Master Password before the real eeprom generated password locking was attempted. This should hopefully let you unlock the drive using the Master Password, which is set to "XBOXSCENE" (without the quotes).

Boot xboxhdm with the drive on primary master and choose the "Boot to DOS with locking tools" options. The run atapwd and use the graphical interface to unlock the drive with a master password.

Good luck!

Ok, I used Atapwd as you mentioned. I tried both unlocking and disabling, both of which give me an error: "Command rejected by drive." I'm using XBOXSCENE as the password just as you mentioned.

I'm scared. Don't tell me this is the end!

thanks

What does atapwd.exe say the security level is?  If it is in Maximum mode (M) then the hdd cannot be unlocked with the master password..  There is a possibility that if the master password was indeed set that you can use that to perform first a Secure Erase Prepare, then a Secure Erase in atapwd.exe..  I personally have never had any luck with this method, but I read about it in the ATA-3 spec..
Also, locked hdd's are usually easily returnable if under warranty..

Please report the state of the drive when in Atapwd. "Command rejected by drive." sounds like it could be in a frozen state. A "working" drive should accept the command regardless of whether the password is wrong or not...

ldots:

The status of the drive is as follows:

S E L F X V
+ + + - - h

That's all I can see in the atapwd.exe util. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If the hdd is under warranty you can get away with that..  With those atapwd stats, XBOXSCENE 'should' be able to unlock the drive via master password.  I'm pretty sure "Command Rejected by Drive" is a standard error in atapwd.exe as I have had it issuedwhen I entered a password incorrectly.. Probably pointing out the obvious here, but XBOXSCENE is case sensitive.  (Just being thorogh, I don't actually think you're that stupid:) )

Yeah, I'm sure I used XBOXSCENE.

So I guess this is just another bump.

Bump.

I'm having the exact same problem and I have no idea what to do!!

I was working on a 1.6 and everything was running fun (Evox, backups, etc.).  I was about to hand it back to my friend when i realized that I forgot to lock the drive.

I installed EPrommer to lock the drive, because for some reason ConfigMagic said there was some sort of error when i would start it up.  Anyway, it seemed to lock fine.  Then I restarted and got an error screen.

I put in a Evox CD to boot from and all my partitions were at 0 and next to "Security" was "Unlock Error".  I have no idea what to do!!! Please help me save my 200GB drive!!

Thanks!!!

Your problem is not exactly the same as you used a different tool to lock the drive. BTW. ConfigMagic errors out because it doesn't support the v1.6 eeprom.

putnam I had a look at the unlockhd code of xboxhdm. The error you got was this right ?
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD(identify) failed - is drive frozen?
This command is issued to get all the info from the drive (Model #, serial, etc.) that the tool needs to generate the eeprom based password. However, when the command is not successful for some reason (IO conflict or whatever), the tool aborts. No security altering commands are sent to the drive.
Therefore I dont see how (un)lockhd should have locked the drive. It certainly does not get to the code where the master password (XBOXSCENE) is set. On a normal run it should also prompt you that it is "now ready to attempt locking" and ask whether to continue or not, and I guess it didn't in this case.

All I can say is try to use every unlocking tool available (try the DOS tools on xboxhdm) and enter empty password strings.

Just a question,
If the drive is unlockable what error would I get in xboxhdm
when I try to lock it?

ldots, that is the error I got but I don't think it had the "is drive frozen?" thing on the end. Does the tool issue the identify command AFTER the operation, as well? Maybe it does the identify, then the operation, then the identify again.

I've tried the dos utils on your distro to no avail :/ are there more?
