Ldots, Help Me.
« on: September 22, 2004, 11:10:00 AM »

ok i thought i should make a separate topic for this, basically i want to update my dash to 5960 so my star wars dvd will work. also i think ldots is probably the only one who knows exactly what to do as he is the author of ltools.
i have the 5960 files on my pc from slayers 2.6, how can i update my dashboard from 4920 to 5960 without uninstalling ltools then reinstalling. i ask this because

1.) I do not own an exploitable game (yet) (yes i know i am working on it)

2.) i do not own a game that updates the dash to 5960.

i have attempted to update by replacing the xodash folder, the xboxdashdata folder, and the xboxdash.xbe (as msdash.xbe and hexed to work with ltools). krayzie helped me do this, but the dvd still attempts to update and gives me an error because of the UDE. i am certain that it is due to updates as i have ran the dashupdate.xbe manually in boxplorer and it gives me the error 21, the only thing i can think of is that the dvd checks for a file that has not been updated.

so basically bottom line, how can i update my dash without uninstalling ltools. is it possible for me to update files then reinstall UDE without taking it off first?

This is my hour of need ldots and it seems that you are the only one with answers..........

You must have done somthing wrong with the manual update. Unless this Star Wars DVD is different I believe that the occurance of the 5960 xboxdashdata folder and the 5960 settings files should tell the DVD not to update the dash. Unless the updater makes a log on E: or something like that?

The dashboard version is actually also "readable" from the xboxdash.xbe file itself (the version bytes are in the xbe), so if the Star Wars DVD actually checks the dashboard for the version it will never be compatible with UDE since this will always have an update.xbe as a renamed xboxdash.xbe.

A semi-automatic dashupdate with Ltools should however be possible :
1) Boot your xbox with the eject button to get to the Ltools menu.
2) FTP in and delete everything from the C-drive (unless you keep some files there that you need to keep). Then FTP in the updated xbox system-files. Slayers 2.6 has working 5960 system-files right?
3) Without rebooting - go to your xbox and run the UDE installer from the Ltools menu. All your custemized ltools files should be on E: right? So if you choose to not re-install the Bios loader and Dashboard you should have the same setup as before but now with the 5960 dash files.
NB! The option to not re-install bios loader and dash is only present on the latest ltools (1.7.5) I believe.

Hope that works. Shoud the installer run into any problems you should resolve them before rebooting as you dont have one of the exploitable games. Of course xboxhdm + the UDE package is always an option....

oh, that's sort of a problem as i don't have a pc and tv in the same room, i have to usually ftp 'blind' without seeing what's on the xbox screen.

i don't think i did anything wrong as i deleted the three files/folders and replaced them with the exact 5960 without editing them. (except for the xboxdash.xbe which i renamed and hexed). it must either

1.) Check the xboxdash.xbe like you suggested.

2.) Require the font files for another purpose.

3.) Contain a newer dash than 5960, but i assume that it would be known on here by now.

4.) Doesn't like hacked bioses.

There is probably nothing i can do, but i thank you for taking your time to help me.

P.S if i am correct about 1 and 2 then it is possible that the days of the UDE are coming to an end.

how old is that star wars disc? There are more versions of the 5960 dashboard. (notice the numbers behind the dash version numbers)

@ krayzie -the star wars dvd came out here in europe three days ago. the numbers after xboxdashdata are 185ead00.

Replacing xboxdash.xbe with an actual dashboard file would disable UDE and the xbox would just boot unmodded (no ltools menu).

You can still drag your xbox to the room where you have your PC. Keep the video cable in the xbox and boot it with the eject button. Then ftp in and replace C: and without shutting it off bring it back to your TV and hook up the video cables before running the UDE install option that should still be ready on screen.

I meant the numbers behind the info give by system info. I thought slayers dash is like 5960.01 and the current dash is like 5960.03. Maybe since the disc is that new it wants to upgrade to the .03 revision.

dude the power cable on the xbox isn't that long. it can't be moved upstairs while still plugged in downstairs lol.

anyway what i meant with moving the three files was doing what i tried earlier (suggested by krayzie) and copy xboxdashdatabunchofnumbers, xodash, and xboxdash.xbe but renamed and already hexed as msdash.xbe. then i can just boot with tray open and choose re-install like you told me to do when i updated ltools (and worked). i suggest this cos wouldn't it reinstall from scratch using the two dash folders i copied over or does ltools reinstall from the compressed C backup?

@krayzie, sorry i didn't make note of that, but i can tell you for a fact that the ms dash said that it was 5960. i'll put them back in a bit and check the number. krayzie if you are correct then i will purchase an exploitable game (i have little choice) and do what you suggested. i didn't think that it would want to update the dash if it is only a couple of decimal places, i thought only when the main integer of the dash changed.

Or you can just burn the Slayers files to a CD-RW that your xbox will read and use boxplorer or any other file-manager to make a clean 5960 C: drive.

If the updater works as expected yours and Krayzie procedure should work as well. That is uploading xboxdashdata.xxx/ xodash/ fonts/ xboxdash.xbe (renamed) and then running the UDE re-installer. It installs from the files found on C: not the compressed image which is only for backup/restoring.

ok i've put the 5960 files on my E drive as a temporary measure. if i put them on the C drive, how would i get from boxplorer to ltools without gamesave exploit? can ltools be loaded from boxplorer?

when you say this do you mean doing what i suggested two of my posts ago. would i really need to move the fonts though?

Navigating to the game-save dir with the ltools package with boxplorer and executing the default.xbe (install.xbe if it's the SC version) should do the trick. You can practice this before replacing the C: drive.

If this doesn't work I think Krayzie could be right in that the dash version on the DVD is more recent than the dash on Slayers.

about 'krayzie's method' do the fonts need to be moved as well? cos i didn't think that the reinstaller needs the original fonts, i didnt need to put them there when i updated ltools.

If you need to reboot to move your xbox and still be able to run UDE you shouldn't put the original fonts back.
However, the fonts can change with dash version too. I assumed that not all fonts will work with all dash versions...

Edit : The re-install does not need the original fonts, but for the updated hexed dash to work you might need the fonts that this dash came with (renamed to *.bak).
