PS. The unpacked files, including their 2MB default.xbe don't work if copied out of the cache, to drive F: say.

Maybe you could hexedit and search for instances of \Device\Harddisk0\Partition[0-9] (prob. unicode) to make it run from F (\Partition6).

I recon that'd work.  And would solve the font problem for UDE users (who wanted to put a playable copy on their Hard Disks).

I see a PPF in the offing. smile.gif

To get the Star Wars Battlefont game demo to play from the HDD on an XBOX with UDE....

With the retail fonts in C:\fonts, boot the Star Wars Battlefont game demo's huge default.xbe from the SWT Extras DVD.
FTP into the XBOX and copy the unpacked Star Wars Battlefont game demo from the Z: cache drive to the PC.  (There should be a Z:\default.xbe, and a Z:\Data\ folder.)

May as well restore the UDE C:\fonts now - while you've FTP access.

On the PC, open the default.xbe with HexEdit and replace the four instances of ASCII (not even Unicode) "Z:\Data", with "D:\Data" and save.
Re-sign using "xbedump default.xbe - habibi"
Rename the out.xbe produced to default.xbe
FTP the modified default.xbe, and a \Data\ folder back to E:\games\STBFDemo\ or F:\games\STBFDemo\ (or wherever you like).

You should now be able to launch the already unpacked Star Wars Battlefont game demo from the HDD - regardless of the state of C:\fonts.

PS. fyi - EvoX, etc. remap D: to the folder the XBE is being launched from.

if one were able to view the raw bytes on a Xbox DVD what would they see? Would the bytes be written backwards? Like MS would be spelled out tfosorciM. Or would the bytes be litterally backwards, so where you'd expect to see D2 (11010010) you'd see 4B (01001011)?

i'm guessing the binary data will be written in side out... so the latter...

I personally don't think an exploit has been found. For an exploit to work you need to run unsigned code (meaning, without an RSA key), I believe. MA and 007 do this by loading an RSA signed game, then loading a bad savegame that holds unsigned code.

An unmodded xbox won't run a hacked xbe file from any DVD, even if it's on a Hulk DVD, because by hacking the xbe file, the rsa key won't be valid. Until someone cracks the RSA encryption algorithm, there won't be a simple exploit such as this. Sorry to burst everyone's bubble. If I'm not mistaken, the RSA key is taken from the pseudo-checksum of the xbe? If that's the case, the second you change any bit in the xbe file, it will no longer be able to load.

Of course, I may be wrong, I haven't been on the scene that long.

Plus, I'm sure people have looked at xbox games on DVDs long before this (Shrek and Hulk come to mind).

Nothing to see here, move along. sleeping.gif

uh... yeah if we can get the hulk to run on a burned dvd, then if we can find an exploit in the loading of a resource file (like fonts) on the disk, we could make an easy exploit installer boot disk without any memory cards...

but... everyone here seems to be defficent in the whole book type setting area... i might have to go get the hulk dvds this week end ....

yeah i don't mind this thread being about the exploit.

like i said earlier us Pal'ers would like a UDE3, or if it is not region specific an Ultimate - Ultimate Dashboard Exploit, being as it would boot on every xbox version, every region, every dashboard, and every kernel.

Just imagine it, every xbox in the world softmoddable by one exploit.............
*changes underwear*

the origonal UDE was named implying that it is the LAST. not the best...

and does the hulk xbe have multi region?

I picked up a copy of BattleFront at my local blockbuster... looks like dashupdate.xbe is in the main directory, so I'm a bit scared to play the game on my exploited boxes...

um... yeah...

I'm still thinking about making an app/driver that can read xbox dvds...

I think the only way to enable something like that would be to have the dvd drive think that it has loaded up an audio cd, or something to that extent, then have it read over it's boundries, and in a raw format... I think it can be done... I just need to work on reviewing the ATAPI specification, and perhaps, through some strange paper writing, I'll figure it out.

Wish me luck!

the way I see it, being that we can MAKE xbox dvds, why the hell can't we READ them? If it's that simple, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to reverse the writing app, and convert it into a reading app... although I'm sure that there's got to be something I'm missing....

thats something I have long "pondered".

why can't we make a program that will read a disc from inside to out and then reverse the bits so that they are reassemble out to in..
then it would be like the xbox reads it...

maybe?

That would also solve the problem with having to make a new layout for the discs... it would save so much time when backing up games...

I have 3 siblings, all younger than me -- I'm 18, my brother that uses my games the most is 9... he tends to bust all the backups that I make for him... good thing dvd's are so much cheaper than the games... ugh. That reminds me... I have to make a new backup of halo for him... he scratched the hell out of the backup I made for him a few months ago... it gives the dirty disc error now....

well, I'm too cheap/lazy to replace the hard drive, and with all the other games that I have installed on there, as well as movies, well... I think you get the point...
