How Do You Keep The Matrix Chip In Place!?
« on: December 17, 2004, 11:21:00 PM »

My Matrix chip keeps on moving out of place/misaligning this results in ms bios coming up (a.k.a everything's useless). This is really annoying. I'm gentle with the system, barely use it, I don't move it around much (even then, I'm very careful). This crap is THAT fussy/fragile??? I don't want to have to get out the torx, open the case up, and physically adjust the chip time I want to play a game!

What's the best solution to keeping the damn thing in place?

Well there are two solutions first is to soler it onto the mother board.  And there is two ways you can do that also.  First is to once it is aligned to solder one of the pogo pin's base onto the lpc thus makeing it harder to be moved.  Secound is to remove the pogos and pin header with a wire.

Another meathoid used is to place something into the d0 that is conductive yet larger of a spot to get a connection alowing it to be less troublesome.  I have used a needle tip and then after getting it wedged into the d0 spot takeing a special pliers that looks like your teeth or a mouth that will cut it off really close to the motherboard.  This alowing the pogo pin have something it can rest on.  This will make it really hard to move.

Last but not lease another solution I have seen before.

Since we have found that needles will stick in the hole really good kinda like the hook you can if you don't have a soldering ironcarefuly drill out the pogo pin and wedge a thin needle into the d0 spot.  Once it is wedge relly well you then can place the matrix over it and have the nedle pook through the hole you drilled into the pogo pin.  Here it is simple wedge something like a wooden tooth pick in there and break it off.  This is very crude and jury rigging it but it does however work.

Over tightening it does two things first really bad one is strip the mounting hole.  Next is the most common it will cause the pogo pins to not seat proporly and cause it to not work,.

Yeah i stripped my mounting hole, if you fill the hole with paper and then screw your chip back on its as good as new.

A customer was havig this problem with his matrix chip, I just soldered a wire from the bottom d0 to the d0 on the modchip.  the other pins generally stay in place quite well.

My xbox was used as the guniea pig when my friends and I all learned to Mod. I've stripped the spot where the scre goes and use a bigger screw but I use to still gets misalignments cause the D0 is not connecting like it should.

So I went for the tetter-totter(?) system, where I placed a folded up piece of paper on the left side of the chip between the chip and the motherboard. Forcing the left side to go higher, causes the right side to go down, thus making contact with the D0.

Stupid, but works. I want to solder it on one day...but I need a solder kit...and something called skill. Knowing me I'll be fusing together each connection.  :P

,

The skill-less way of soldering the matrix chip onto the xbox is to add solder to the ends of the pogo pins and to heat up the pogo pins once you get the chip aligned.

This should heat up the solder enough to make them stick to the lpc and d0.
