64mb Usb Stick And Mega X Key
« on: August 04, 2004, 09:13:00 PM »

I have done research here and found few things concerning what I need.
I don't have the money to go out and purchase a mod chip and be done with this.
This is my only safe option I believe.
I am a newb to this but no stranger to it
(modding playstations, thats old stuff though)

What I have:

1st XBOX, been updated from Splinter Cell 2003
(XBL icon is present and I have gone in it)

OXB memory card

Win.XP

64mb memory stick

Portable hard drive (20gb and 40gb)

3 usb cables

XB conectors

App. from Mega X Key (download from site)

What else do I need extra to complete this process?
Can I get Bios using this method?
Do I have to ftp my box to get any Extra (G's)?
Should I buy the Mega X Key or Chip if all fails?

Since the Mega X Key app. only works with memory units with 32mb. or more can my 64mb USB Stick work with the app. to get saves?
Will I have to change the dashboard to have this to work?

From some of the things I did read one said, that if the new xbox live update was
installed, that using linux was not going to work on the xbox. (I do want xbox live, I don't have a xbox live subscription)

Please, can someone help me with what I have asked and I will most definetly coroperate, update, and help with anything you may need.

Download the hacked version of MxK which will notice many more USB sticks than the regular version. The hacked version is available on the tools page here at X-S or you can just follow this direct link.

By xbox connectors do you mean a USB adapter? If not then you will need one. You can either make one, request one from MS (for free plus shipping) or buy one from a website like lik-sang. I recommend you make it, as you can have it done in 15 minutes and it'll only cost you the price of a usb extension cable. By far, the best tutorial to make an xbox USB converter cable is this one: How to Make an Xbox to USB Cable That Still Works on Your Xbox and Doesn't Look Like Ass (v0.1)

Please note, you will need to solder the FEMALE end (usb port) to the the xbox plug, not the MALE end! I am unsure whether this will allow the usb stick to function as a memory card when the controller is connected, but if your xbox doesn't recognize it, all you need to do is disconnect the controller at the breakaway cable. Then again, it may recognize it anyway. Make sure your USB stick is supported, otherwise you will end up buying another usb stick which will cost just as much as the megaxkey. Check on this compatibility list. Just because it's not on here doesn't mean it's unsupported.

Once you get your converter built, simply plug in your usb stick, boot your xbox and go to memory manager. If it's compatible, it will tell you it has succesfully formatted your memory card. Then the MXM_BXBX (hacked version of mega x key) should recognize it just fine. (It worked for me!)

Goodluck, and let me know if the xbox controller must be unplugged for the xbox to recognize your usb stick. If you have any problems or questions, press my buttons below. V

Thanks for that bit of info Pillzburydoofus. Its given me more understanding on my situation.
Someone tell me if this is correct plz.

All of what you are about to read, I have not actually done. I would like to know what I can and can't do.
Thanks for your time and after reading can you please post a response to my concern.

I will be running Xbox-saves-manager and Mega X Key software (MXK).
Also I have my ethernet cable directly hooked to my Xbox and PC
(my PC is wireless with internet access).

The first one I am using is MXK (method)

* I have my XBOX. (not modded or tampered)
* I have my PC. (wireless XP)

1) I connect my USB 64MB IBM stick to my PC.

1A)This should allow me to get my saves off of my PC and onto my memory stick.
1B)Do my saves need extraction from the zip files or not?

1C)Using the Mega X Key software, it doesn't recognize my IBM USB stick.
I can't get my saves to transfer to my stick(using the MXK software prog.). I could unlock the stick and drag the zip files to my stick, but I'm not sure if that will work.

2) I then I put my saves directly on the USB stick. (since it wasn't recognized by the Software)

3) Next I will connect my USB stick to a Female usb cable (side).
The other end of my Female usb cable has been converted to have the XBOX
connector attached to it(device that goes in the XBOX controller port).

3ex) Example of what I mean:
XB connecter in xbox, then XB connecter and usb cable connected, next Female End of the cable and Usb stick are connected.

3A1)The order from the xbox controller port are: XB connecter, femal usb cable, usb stick

3A)I believe that doing it this way, it should allow me to go into my memory on the xbox hdd., now my USB stick should act as a memory card.

3B)Do I have to have a controller directly hooked up to the Xbox connecter or can I have a controller hooked to another port?

3C)If I cut the cord on a controller, then solder the FEMALE USB cable (opposite end from the female side) to the wires in the cord, will my USB Stick be recognized as a mem. card?

3D)Does my USB stick need to be formatted by the XBOX (or the pc)?

4) I connect my XB connecter to the xbox (like in, "3A1")

5) My xbox ON with NO game (and still not modded) in the memory menu.
My Xbox shows my USB stick as a memory card and I can take my saves off and upload them to my stock hdd.

5A) Will this work?

**This is all of what I understand about using the MXK software without having the Key itself.**

Xbox-Saves-Manager.

Reading C thru C3 comes directly from the Usage release of XBox-Saves-Manager
(the first paragraph was cut (srry) I did patch it though, and has basically the same info as the readme file.

A) The prog. comes on and is looking for my saves in its directory. It came with one save of its own.

B) I now import my saves to the PC side by looking for where I have stored my saves.
B1)Found and uploaded to prog.

C) The configuration for this, as I have read is, running EvolutionX (ftp) on your PC first, having a network connection from your PC to your Xbox using a ethernet cable, router, hub etc. Go into the connection manager and set the xbox IP address as indicated in EvoX.

C1)Once you've setup that information, hit OK and the Connection Manager window will close. You can now hit the green Connect button on the toolbar and XBSM will connect to your XBox and download the information it needs to create a list of all the saves on it. You will then see whatever saves you have in the XBox pane.

C2)If you want to send a save to your PC, simply select the save or saves you want to send, and hit the arrow in the center of the window that points to the PC pane. It will send the saves to your PC, compress and store them automatically for you. Reverse this process to send saves from your PC to your XBox. There is a description data you can edit for every save on your PC. Double-click a save to edit
this info.

C3)You can also browse to different folders on your PC where you have saves stored to load into XBSM. If you have a memory card, you can plug it into the XBox and have XBSM read the saves stored on the card and list them in the XBox pane. However, in order for XBSM to recognize the memory card, there must be at least one save stored on it. This just scratches the surface, there are a lot more features.
Play around with it and you should be able to figure most of everything out without any difficulty!

????Even though I have all of this information I am a little unsure about using it. How would I be able to get a saved file on my Xbox memory card (I think i know how to do that) and could I still use the method in (3,3A1,3A) instead of using my xbox memory card? Do I need a modded Dashboard????

This is what I know. Can someone verify this and tell me what will work and what won't work.
When I have completed this operation succefully I will edit this thread with answers to my ?'s and have a step by step guide on how to do this.

All credit goes to where and whom it may concern, thank you for creating this information. :)

Don't use Mega x key's software use Action replay's. Can be dled off their site.

2) I then I put my saves directly on the USB stick. (since it wasn't recognized by the Software)
First you have to sonnect it to the xbox and try to make the xbox use. Then it will give this message your card couldn't be read so it was erased. That means the xbox formatted it to fatx. THen you connect it to pc use ar drivers and software and put save on xbox.

3) Next I will connect my USB stick to a Female usb cable (side).
The other end of my Female usb cable has been converted to have the XBOX

yup

yes

Those are the questins i can answer.

I don't have action replay and I'm not using MXK, just the software. I want to use my IBM 64mb mem. stick.

DCT - did this actually work? I've got a 128MB CF card I'm trying to use, but haven't had any luck yet.

You know you guys can mod your controller, so that you can use a regular MS memory card for this, instead of trying to get those USb drives working.

Alot easier, and alot less headache.
