Xbox Update With Ude

As far as I know that is all correct... this may sound stupid but if you're cheap enough to use a softmod why would you pay for live? Just my opinion.

if a new dash is released the xbox will likely crash in the updating part since the update.xbe files use the xbox fonts. When you see that happen uninstall the UDE and let the game update the dashboard. After that reinstall the UDE.

@redneon: noticed you posted this in the "Ude/ude2 On Xbox Live Tutorial" thread too ... also noticed the first post therein provides the answer.  dry.gif

Well I don't think m$ is gonna design update.xbe's without the fonts cuz it boots that litlle screen with the scrolling bar while upgrading which obviously needs font files... Unless they create an update.xbe which uses their own font files from dvd and not from the hd. Damn I shouldn't bring them any ideas

The method I go about when I purchase a new game that needs to update goes like this:

1. FTP into your box and rename your font file back to their original position as well as the xboxdash.xbe back to normal.

2. Reboot your box and boot your retail game.

3. Update.

4. Gamesave your way back in and rename the files back into place.

5. Reboot and don't forget to place your retail disc in the drive on boot. smile.gif

I am unsure if they downloader.xbe calls the fonts DIR. If it does, you will need to rename your files back to original state. If it doesn't then, then you're fine. A good test would be to pop in the retail game, try and download the content. If it hits an error screen/freezes/reboots the title then uninstall UDE.

The downloader doesn't explicitly invoke the xtf's, however, it can indirectly via an updater and/or dashboard checker eh.

(I've tried to exploit this via the MA HDD version, but so far have only managed to "bootstrap" a ROJ/ROE-less XBL login related screen...)

You will get banned if the box attempts to communicate with the live servers while your kernel has been edited. Loading bioses or even the fonts will cause your kernel to be in a changed state. As long as you have booted from a retail disc upon boot your kernel is not changed. Therefore, you will not be banned for your fonts being changed. You will just get a game freeze or crash.

Quite simply,
MS will ban your xbox if:
There is a nonstandard bios running on your system, and/or any invalid *.xbe signatures in use.  As simple as that.

How you get your xbox to boot a retail bios is another matter. IMO, the easist way is to use ldots 1.7.2 installer. Run the Uninstall option to go on LIVE.
When you want the UDE back, boot your exploited game, run the installer. You'll be running again very quickly.

For those griping about not having MA/007/SC/whatever:
You are making your xbox do wonderful things, WITHOUT A CHIP. It's not much of a stretch to get 1 of these games. Don't be cheap. If you have $50 to go on LIVE & buy games, get one of the above. It's a life-saver. I'm not being elitist. If you really can't/won't get one, then suffer the annoyance of the hot-swap.

Just my worthless .02
