I was a bit wrong, the update.xbe even from the disc will call the fonts dir, therefore if you with to run this file from the disc ( downloaded the updated engine ) you will need to set your original dash back first.

Downloader.xbe should work however.

that's what I meant with this post. Guess I will need to make myself clearer in the future. Glad to see the adition in the tut. (too bad I didn't get any credit for it though  biggrin.gif )

For live dash access you could always just create an evox script to rename the dashboard files.  Just have this accessable by a gamesave, easy UDE switching on and off.

Should work, then again never tried it.  I got no need for live smile.gif

This is ofcourse a very safe way to toggle between mod and retail state. It does require you to own the game though.

Would it be possible to use a Pre-Live dash on your C:\ drive that loads fonts from C:\ root, yet have UDE fonts (modified versions) in C:\fonts, and load that update.xbe from the DVD (maybe clicking a Live tab in the game) and exploit it bringing you to PBL/nkpatcher?

Useless, also the fonts would need to be like a doubledash fonts, as they don't run on boot... I guess it would be a nice proof of concept...

I have a quick question. It's all well and good updating all your games now before UDE is installed. But what happens if an update to a game is released in the future? E.g. Say I load up Rainbow Six 3 and there are updates available. Doesn't it automatically download them thereby screweing up your UDE installation surely?

What would happen in this situation?

krayzie: well... i thought it might be a good way to stop little sisters playing on your xbox and screwing it up.. booting the xbox normally would probably hang it - but booting with a cd in to the live tab would boot the exploit...

now that I think about it, it's a bit of a crap idea really because you'd get into a clock loop with your xbox unplugged... ah well.

How would it go into a clock loop? You boot with a pre live dash right?

tried it lots of times. the system just hangs or errors before the upgrading since the needed files to upgrade use the original xbox fonts.

Krayzie, does that mean that the c: drive stays intact? Nothing gets overwritten?

Most game have 3 programs of concern :

update.xbe - since this use c:\fonts, it just cannot perform its work and it shouldn't do anything to the c:\

dashupdate.xbe - this is the most dangerous as it may update c:\xboxdash.xbe without accessing the network

My guess is the dashupdate.xbe would check c:\xodash\xonlinedash.xbe(or could it be c:\xboxdash.xbe) to see if the dashboard needs to be upgraded.

That would work. However, once your upgraded to the latest dashboard just place your retail game in the drive, Power Down, and power back on. This will allow you to go live with no ban problems since the disk is booted before any exploits.

hmmm, if u use the dualboot.xbe to either load the pbl loader, or with the eject on, load the msdash...

then MS will detect the other fonts? Or could you still access the live tab then?

With kind regards,
Marco
