Anyone want to get a checksum/hash/something of the patched update.xbe so people can check if it worked? As usual, I don't need it, but I'm sure some people will.

QUOTE (chimpanzee @ Jul 18 2004, 08:33 AM)
I have an idea, instead of diff against 4920 update.xbe, why not diff against those found in these newer dash as more than likely, they are already there on the machines. Or may be go one step further, diff it against the newest dash as anyone should be able to get a copy of that by using MS's download service. After all, they would even update it without your consent and even you are not live user.

So whenever there is a question of where can I find this update.xbe, tell them to ask MS, legally and conveniently. No need for usual place which is so implicit.

Updated the patch in the root post, It didn't actually take up as much space as I thought it would. So if you have dashboard 5659 or 5960, you can create the necessary xbe from its update.xbe also smile.gif

Directly from rmenhal on which fonts to use:

QUOTE

Updatefonts60 is based on the good'ol bert-ate-ernie updatefonts6.
Updatefonts70 is based on updatefonts7. I included both because
updatefonts7 is so recent and the method may still require refinement.

I ran a test and could not get the Updatefonts60 to work on a K:5838 (1.6) at all, so I guess you will have to try for yourself.

MD5sums are included in the readme.txt

A step to easily check if the kernel like update.xbe, just use the real fonts, if it loads successfully, a screen would popup telling you the update is done.

Hmmm.... I tried the matching bert and scraps fonts from version 6, and still error 13.

try the stock(MS) font first.

Well i'm having someone bring me a 1.6 tomorrow so I can try this on.  I was gonna update my dash, then flash my X2 with the latest kernel to test it first but I thought the bios wouldn't work because of the difference in video chips, etc so I'm just gonna wing it and hope I don't mess up his box.  Has anyone tried flashing a 1.6 original bios onto a modchip?   Also, if this works with the latest dash which it has to to work on 5713+, could this be also live compatible or is the original UDE live compatible as well and I missed it in the 50 page thread.  I don't have live but would consider getting it if I could play my retails on a softie without any switching of files or scripts to turn on/off.

the game is live compatible, the dashboard is not.

So if you want to go live, first do it in the none-mod state(getting live id etc.). After that, you can mod and retail game can still go live.

The only thing I am not sure is if the retail game then later launch c:\xboxdash.xbe(which is just update.xbe), what will happen ? I don't think there would be permanent damage as update.xbe won't perform the expected xboxdash function so should not make you being banned but would the game stall there ?

I remember this being discussed.  If memory serves, I think certain games included dash upgrades, where it would check your dash version, i'm guessing in xboxdash.xbe (hoping not). Well needless to say, once xboxdash.xbe is replaced, ude will no longer work, and i would expect you'd boot to error 21 if the font files don't get upgraded with the dash.  This is all speculation, so don't quote me, maybe someone who uses ude and live can shed some light on the matter.

but the xboxdash.xbe is not a real one. For example, MechAssault don't have a complete xboxdash.xbe on the DVD but some kind of program(probally) to patch the existing one. Would they check for some signature before doing it ?

Again I'm just speculating...

I don't know what they've done in the past as far as patching goes, i'm sure there is some kind of check since the patching program would need to know what dash version is on there currently to apply the proper patch.

But who knows what tricks they'll come out with now.  I think there was a live patch within a few days when the doubledash was figured out. So after kicking themselves in the ass for a while, you can bet they will try to do something, atleast with the ppl that use live, or play retail games.

Nice work! Glad to see the HDD scanner was put to good use. But it's mission is not completed yet. Sure there are other HDD signed exploitable xbe's out there. We need to find a PAL xbe that's font exploitable. Preferably the NFL Fever 2003. I'm quite sure this game was released in Europe.

If this turns up I will start making a UDE2 memcard installer.

ldots,

don't know if you are interested to something that I am working on. I have made a few changes to the xbox kernel that has the following characteristics :

1. the controller can be used a limited keyboard(cursor + enter + esc)
2. I put a copy of dialog in the initrd(uclibc based) so you can do some menu things there, together with (1)
3. I made the IDE driver modular(and yes, F: + G: can be seen too now) so it may be possible to do in place HDD cloning/upgrade, all in front of the TV.

drop me a line if you are interested.
