im still sorta stunted since most the tuts im reading say they wont work with anything above 5713+ n what  so ... dev, i know you'd hate to hear this , or anyone reading this cause i know you get lots of noob questions.. but truelly i need the help cause im one of the few newbs with the newer xbox system with im guessing just this one trick in the bag.. vs's all the others. so if anyone can help with a start to finish guide .. id be very loved, even if it was just 123 links explaining some tuts lol :|

An advice for noob, tell others about your situation as much detail as you can. Keeps on saying I am noob is not going to help. Do your share.

So what kernel/dash you have now ? Is you machine a PAL or NTSC ? Are there a file called update.xbe on your HD ?

You would first need to access your HD which means a game save or hotswap and examine it under PC.

After you have access to your HD and you have answered the about questions, others would have an idea what to tell you.

I have an idea, instead of diff against 4920 update.xbe, why not diff against those found in these newer dash as more than likely, they are already there on the machines. Or may be go one step further, diff it against the newest dash as anyone should be able to get a copy of that by using MS's download service. After all, they would even update it without your consent and even you are not live user.

So whenever there is a question of where can I find this update.xbe, tell them to ask MS, legally and conveniently. No need for usual place which is so implicit.

Another good idea which I will take into consideration. The only reason I chose 4920's xbe was because it was so widely circulated and I didn't want newbies to start with UDE2. But I guess if you have a 1.6, new or not you have to start here. Give me a minute and I will do the conversion for 5659 and 5960.

EDIT: actually the patch data is too large to host on my POS free aol server. If you have any ideas how to solve this, wink.gif I'm all ears.

Hey, um, about the new fonts. I got the update.xbe patched and all. I know this because  when I boot up, I get the Xbox logo and the M$ logo underneath after a few seconds and it just hangs. The part that I am confused about is the fonts. Everyone else is talking about the two (?) new fonts.  I put the aforementioned code into notepad saved it as bert-ate-ernie original.b64 and extracted UNKNOWN.001 and renamed it. But what font should I rename it to to get it to work? Does it have to have a certain file name that I am missing? Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I already have a BioLD folder (PBLLite) and a dashboard folder with my dash in it. I can still boot to MA and load a gamesave to FTP. What should I do?  unsure.gif

See if this will give you an idea, the exploit works on the following sequence :

BIOS--->c:\xboxdash.xbe(update.xbe)------>c:\fonts\bert.xtf ------>c:\fonts\ernie.xtf

Now I have no idea what path your ernie.xtf compiled to look for but it is most likely e:\default.xbe(habibi signed).

EDIT: just checked it, it  is e:\default.xbe. Just use the bert.xtf for NFL. ernie.xtf is generic and the same across all versions of kernel and update.xbe

Good idea, but that isn't true. You can change your EEPROM to make this work (which I stated in the readme.txt of the patch).

Doesn't this turn your Xbox into an US box though?

mikeinnj: bert-ate-earnie original.rar.bz2.b64, decrompress the B64 to give you unknown.001, un-bz2 it to give you a .rar, unrar it and you'll get the two fonts required

Yes it does, which you could use the UDE2 to launch your 'real' PAL games. The only thing that would suck is those 'real' PAL games that you use on xbox live sad.gif. Other than that, if you had a PAL / JAP box you could change it to make this xbe execute.

OK, its looking like that I am compiling the fonts wrong. I dont know what to name the .b64 file after pasting the code into notepad and going to save it. Do i save it as fonts.b64, bert-ernie, fluffy bunnies.b64? Thank you four your help, atleast now I know that when I extract the b64 I am supposed to see 2 fonts. (?) Thank you again for your response.  smile.gif

to extract the fonts(you need iceows and winrar) :

1. copy and paste the text to notepad
2. save as whatever.b64
3. open it and extract to unknown.001
4. rename to whatever.tar.bz2
5. open that and find your way to the fonts(it is in another 70.tar.bz2 file)

You need to have :

1. MechAssault none patched version(non platinum release), that is the old version Or
2. 007 AUF Or
3. Splinter Cell 1

Then download the correct game save from the usual place (look for turtorials about xbins)

Now is the most difficult issue, how to load the game save to the memory card ? Ask a friend with an hacked xbox to ftp it to then use that to write to the memory card.

Can't find one ? I cannot help but there are tutorials floating around telling how to do it in PC, but don't ask me where because I have no idea.

After you have the game save on the memory card, copy it to your xbox. Boot your game and launch the exploit and now you have gained access to your HDD.

The above applies to every Xbox, no matter version.

OK, now I'm getting an error 13 on boot. I got the font files extracted fine to C:\fonts\. (Thanks again!) I made the new fonts directory with just the Bert and Ernie fonts in it. I have a 5713.01 dash with the matching NFL Fever font (4920 update and the patch, the sizes also matched up) I do have a habibi signed PBL from my other softmodded box (PBL Lite, Ldots) in the root of my E drive with its two other files. Any ideas? Do I have to rename the bert font to just bert.xtf or is it fine the way it is. I tried both ways, and both give me error 13. Thank you.

did you rename the update.xbe as c:\xboxdash.xbe ? make sure you backup the real one before you do so. I have no idea what error 13 means, other can help.

Yeah, renaming the newly compiled update.xbe is the first thing i did after i applied the patch.

do you know how to compile the fonts ? If yes, compile it with blinkled enable so at least we know if the hack works or not. It is in the ernie.asm

Here is quick UDE tutorial for those needing it:

1. Get the required files. You need the fonts you're gonna use, the update.xbe you're gonna use, xbedump.exe, and the version of PBL you are gonna use
2. Use the gamesave exploit on your Xbox. Lots of tutorials on how to do this out there. Do it however you like - just get that gamesave onto your HDD. Then run the "Run Linux" option in the game and the dashboard will run.  Set up FTP access etc.
3. IMPORTANT - Backup your entire HDD, and your EEPROM. This is so you can fix it if you mess up. You don't wanna turn your Xbox into a doorstop now, do you?
4. Uncompress your copy of PBL. Make sure the .xbe is called default.xbe. Extract XBEDump in the same dir. Go into command prompt and go into the correct directory. Type:
XBEDUMP default.xbe -habibi
5. Edit your pbl.ini making sure it has the correct RC4 key. If not, obtain the key from elsewhere and copy and paste it in.
6. Copy your BFM bios of choice into the PBL directory. Rename it to xboxrom.bin
7. FTP to your Xbox. Delete c:\xboxdash.xbe and upload update.xbe. Rename update.xbe to xboxdash.xbe.
8. Go into the font directory and delete the fonts that are there. Upload the fonts you are using - do not rename them.
9. FTP your copy of PBL to your e:\ making sure that the filename for PBL is default.xbe.
10. Upload your dashboard of choice to wherever the bios is set to run it from. e:\evoxdash.xbe is a safe bet

Voila. One UDEd 'box.

you may like to rename c:\fonts and c:\xboxdash.xbe instead of deleting it as you may need them even after mdding.

Yeah, I pretty much have done EVERYTHING in that lil' tut you have go there. BTW, chimp, sry i don't yet know how to compile fonts.  I just get an error 13 on boot. I know that the PBL I am using is habibi signed since it works fine on my UDE 4034 box just fine along with the e:\dashboard\default.xbe (Avalaunch) The BIOS' RC4 keys match etc. So, waht could be up here. I also renamed the fonts directory to f0nts, with original fonts in it, and the bert and ernie in the new "fonts" directory. I'm not a complete newb to UDE, ive done 17 xboxes with Ldots installer and have upgraded 4 hard drives, so I do have a basic idea of how UDE works with the fonts, pbl, bios, and dash. Just wondering why in the heck I am getting an error 13....

sorry can't help as I am noob in these error things. I believe if you see the error screen, it means at least the hack has kicked in(otherwise, it just hang there at the logo). You do have e:\default.xbe, right ?

I am sure other expert will chip in soon, they are just on vacation, it is afterall weekend.

You always have your backup for that. It was a quick tut hence why I didn't go into much detail.

As for Error 13... that's a dashboard launch failure. Check that c:\xboxdash.xbe is the correct update.xbe, and that you've placed the fonts correctly.

OK, yeah, I do have the PBL's default.xbe in the root of E. An error code 13 means dashbaord corruption or missing files, etc. Hope this helps. I do agree with you that Pedro, Rhemnal, Ldots, and the rest of you deserve a pat on the back, a case of Bawls, and a good vacation.  wink.gif

um, that suggest that the kernel doesn't like update.xbe as a dash. Could it be a PAL vs NTSC thing ?
