when u type "unlockhd -a" it will show u hd serial and hd passord and unlock the hd. then you have to write "reboot" and press enter to restart the system and you will be in the menu screen agaiin.

and yes, when you unlock teh hd it will still be unlock unless you lock it again in the menu "3". only hotswapped hds lock after restart.

Damn. It's so obvious something goes wrong even with the most elaborate discription. I unlocked it and then I ran the 1:st option "build from scratch". Everything went smooth and I thought this seemed way to easy.... if it had only worked... the hd got frozen. I don't know if it matters, but when I was done with the installation I rebooted and entered xboxhd to see if I needed to add anything else, but I figured that I didn't, but just to see what it said I ran option 6 and there it said that it was frozen. I ran "lockhd -a" but it said that it was frozen and that I should try dissabling something in the bios, but I couldn't find what I should edit.

Does anyone know how to fix a frozen hd?

Maybe it only does this since the hd is from like 98, and new one's don't? I don't really care about that old 20gb drive, but I don't want to see it happen with the 160gb drive.

Is it possible it got affected when I ran option 6? Seems very unlikely, but I don't know.

Must have been done by your BIOS somehow. I don't notice ldots program to do any freezing. Anyway, it is not a permenant thing, power cycle would reset the frozen state. Frozen just mean you cannot change the security setting(lock/unlock etc.).

Ok, thanks, sounds good? What do you mean by "power cycle would reset the frozen state."? Should I disconnect it for a while? I don't get it.

power cycle just means power off and on again. It is a temp state sort of memorized in the 'RAM' of the HD. The power goes, it would be forgotten.

Well I left it unlplugged for about half an hour and it was still frozen. If it's the same when I wake up, I try some last resort stuffs if possible. Thanks a lot anyways, I'll let you know how it goes.

(the clock is 3:40 am here now, I'm pretty tired)

G'night

check your BIOS. If it does it, every time you power it on, it freeze it again.

I'm in the same boat, my xboxhdd is frozen and nothing has worked to undo it, including a complete bios reset. I have a Compaq system board from 2000 and it doesn't have the setting to disable ide auto detection in the bios like xboxhdm instructs. It looks like the only way to fix this is upgrading the bios sad.gif

May I ask why there is no command to go back to the main menu in xboxhdm? If I wasn't forced to reboot after rebuilding C I wouldn't be stuck with a frozen drive right now.

do you have your hdd password? then you could lock the hdd from option "4" ( boot to dos with locking/unlocking tools) and use lockhd.bat to lock the hard drive but i dont recommend it. if you do everything right you should be Ok ( type the password correctly).

Are you doing HD upgrade ? If yes and everything fails using xboxhdm, you may help me to test out my new tools running on Xbox :-)

How does that bypass the frozen state the hdd is in?

2 chimpanzee:

No, I was restoring backed up C files.

When choosing to "rebuild C" you shouldn't be forced to reboot??? It just re-formats C: and copies files form the xboxhdm C-folder to the C-partition.

When "building from scratch" it does reboot. This will be changed in the next update (thanks for the hdparm tip Chimp).

My advice is to try a different PC/Bios.

I shouldn't say the program automatically does it per say, but after C is rebuilt there is no way to go back to the first xboxhdm load screen (to acess the linux lock/unlock) without rebooting first. I ended up in a catch 22...damned if I do damned if I don't. The box was already on life support, now it's just dead until I can attempt this again on a bios that disables auto detection.

I upgraded my bios a bit, and still nothing.

Now I'm going to pick up the most current and see if it adds ide device settings.
