ldots, if you have time and inclination... I'm wondering how much "liter and faster" it would be if the key values and rom name were "hardcoded"?  It then wouldn't need a boot.cfg nor any associated validation coding, I presume.

(I realize it couldn't be released like that though, but guess its source could be, if the key values were removed eh.)

He would then need to hardcode the rc4 key which would make his work illegal to distribute.

Yeah, would be extremely easy, but not desirable for the reason Angerwound mentions.

I should have been clearer; those of us interested in using it would add the key values back into the source and compile it eh.

That would require the user to add the keys to the source and compile. Seems to be more work that just add the keys to boot.cfg

Yep, only folks wanting the "litest, fastest" version, who don't program in C but can compile and build (such as myself) would be interested.

I really appreciate everything you've achieved already so, as I said initially, "ldots, if you have time and inclination..." eh.

i suppose this may require major modifications to PBL, but wouldn't it be possible to store the BIOS already decrypted/decompressed? (like when you split the BIOS into 2bl, remainder, xboxkrnl in xbtool)

Meaning the user couldn't change bios that easily.
Personally I dont think there is any need to change the current setup.

QUOTE (rmenhal @ Jul 9 2004, 04:51 PM)
Parsing a simple configuration file ain't that slow. It's a safe bet that most of the time is spent on decrypting and uncompressing the new bios. Removing the config file would not make PBL-lite faster.

I'm sure you're right (assuming that you meant "noticeably" faster).  I'd guess that removing any related validation, if there is any, would make little difference too.

However, I'd expect the resulting xbe would consequently be liter and faster, in absolute terms eh.   wink.gif

@CSB: Yep, I no doubt am and didn't mean to infer otherwise.  I just got the default.xbe from this thread (and already had the official distro).

@Tomilius: thanks for the very helpful advice; I'm really impressed with the way you've mastered PBL and made such a contribution.  I don't have confidence that I will figure it out anytime soon, but will certainly try...

Yes jeks, because its intended purpose is to do nothing more than load bios.
