), but I don't have an XBOX!Live account.
However, I
have recently got broadband, and my XBOX is networked to my Windows XP PC. I recalled that this is one of the XBOX!Live configurations.
I used XP's network bridging feature, to logically tie the network card talking to the XBOX, to the USB broadband modem. I used Linksbox, the XBOX web browser, to check it out, and, Wow! I could surf the web from my XBOX

. Stage 1 complete.
I then returned my C drive to the Pre-live-Dashboard 4817 installed as the boot Dashboard.
Then, with the XBOX networked to the PC, but the PC
definitely NOT connected to the Internet, I launched a backup of Splinter Cell the download content option was available and I selected it. As I expected, it ran a Dashboard updater that updated my C:\ from pre-live Dashboard 4817 to live 1.0 Dashboard 4290. (This much I already knew).
I then switched off my modchip, and booted to the pure 4290 Dashboard, and dialled up to the internet from my PC. I then gingerly clicked on Dashboard 4290s XBOX Live option, and after entering some network settings when it asked (IP, DNS, Gateway (the IP of my PC)), much to my surprise, my 4290 Dashboard was updated to the latest 5960 for free. (You could probably do this simply using soft-mods, or by using a rented original XBOX!Live title.)
