hi
I want to hotswap my xbox but i have a question about the flaoting thing... do i only have to connect my pc with my xbox with a metal cable ? because the xbox is isolated... but my pc is standing on isolated paws (well acording to me it's also isolated form the ground....) so what do i have to do connect the xbox the pc and somthing else (lika a centralheater what is connected to the ground) or is this just about the electricity between xbox and pc and not the groung (earth)

This is a great tut .. one thing I don't think I saw was about the JUMPER SETTINGS for master and slave on most computers. If its already included in here then please ignore me, but if its not.. that could be the cause of a lot of peoples problems with hot swapping.

You usually have to adjust the jumper settings if you unplug a cdrom drive or hard drive on the same IDE channel as the hard drive. Also, the xbox hard drive may need to have its jumper moved to be seen by the PC's BIOS.

Can anyone else explain this further and in more detail?

Tried hotswapping in windows, Device Manager detects the HD, but neither Fatxplorer or fatXbox Explorer (HDD driver is totally screwed, can't find the DLLs) find it. Also, when I try hotswapping in BIOS, it gives me a Secondary Master ATAPI incompatible error. Does it have to be on primary IDE? Or is my mobo just not likeing it? (Note: The AV cable was not plugged in - I just removed the IDE cable from the Xbox's DVD drive)
I already have MechAssault and a memory card -> PC  USB adaptor, so I might just go buy a memory card...

well okay here goes.  ive only got one IDE cable in my computer and it runs from my motherboard to my two disc drives.  well i disconnected the end from the motherboard and am using that end to go into the box.  then i use the other into to go into the mother nboard and the middle to go into the dvdrom drive.  I set my computer to boot from dvdrom drive with the xboxhdm disc in it.  when i reboot my comp the xboxhdm opens up then i turn on my box and wait for it to unlock and then i switch the cables.  then i try to boot number 2 from the menu and it says that the linux disc cannot be found

when i tried the hotswap from windows running after i scanned for new hardware, the box's harddrive appears but the disc drive disappears.

but now whenever i try to boot the linux disc on the menu with number 2 it sticks at loading

Some notes about the difference in potential between the PC and xbox is just that, a diff. in potential. If you measure the diff. in potential from a static charge it could get up into the 1000s of volts. the current or force behind the voltage is almost non existant. so basicly if they were to touch it would dissapate instantly.

Im not saying it couldn't damage the HD, Im just saying its no big deal and is you touch the case of your xbox it will dissipate through your body asnd you should be fine.

I'm just wondering, how would one go about re-locking the HDD? I mean, in the highly unlikely case that one's HDDkey/EEPROM isn't stored on the hard disk, how could one re-lock the disk? Could it be done by re-swapping the disk back into the XBox, then shutting down the XBox (assuming it was never turned off in the first place)?

Hey I need some help. By all means im no noob.I know what im doing hot swaping and all.

1) I dont have my EEPROM.
Can I still replace the C: Drive with a backup copy that I have to make the dash work?

2) I realize that I must have my HDD Unlocked before I can make any changes to the hard drive, or detect it for that matter.
Can I use the hot swap method to unlock my hdd and then boot up the .ISO for xboxhdm and have it detect.
To lock back up the drive can I just unplug the IDE cable and Plug back in the xbox one, then shut off the xbox?

3)When I go into my "Favorite Cd burning software" I burn the .iso I made, with a "Make CD Bootable" Option in my cd burner. Then burn the disc. By the way, the burning software is Sonic Digital Media LE v.7.
The only problem is, when I boot my pc from the cd it says "Operating System not found"... In my bios, do I need to configure it to detect my pc hdd first, then read off the disc, or can I leave it like I have it right now, and just have it read the dvdr drive first and then load the pc hdd.
I have even tried burning the .ISO as a data cd file. And it didnt give me the error. Just loaded my OS (Which is windows XP Home, SP2).

4) I always get error 21. I know I can fix this with some lame windows program. Like FATXPLORER, the only problem I have is that It doesnt show what drives I have, wont let me replace the whole file folders. And is an all around crappy program. I really want this program to work and I would do anything to get my box working again, (Plus my friend wants his XBOX back. LOL)

Thanks for all the help (even though I haven't gotten any yet.)
Please dont flame me, this is my first post after reading around this forum trying to find an answer.

Thanks again.

Hotswapping will allow access to the drive, just make sure to backup your eeprom.

the xbox hd will auto lock after powerloss.

place the needed files on the xboxhdm cd before you burn it.
