Dashboard Exploit Summary

Perhaps the DVD video remote control bug should be added to the list of Cons for some of the exploits above. That's the bug that won't allow you to play DVDs directly using the default MS Dashboard or else it resets when it needs to access the fonts to display a message (usually when you press a particular button on your remote). As far as I know the only exploits free from this bug are audio and double dash. Mechinstaller allows you to launch the DVDs if you allow the MS Dash to load completely before inserting the disc since it retains access to the fonts. If you boot your Xbox with a DVD inside or close the tray before the dash loads the DVD bug will be present. Other exploits require you to use a third party application or a hex-edited dash. It's not a huge deal, but if you're someone who uses your Xbox and the remote dongle to watch your DVDs frequently (as I do) it might be a factor to consider.

Which method is best for my config?
K:4817
D:5960 (i'll downgrade it)
Would like to play games from dvd not off hard drive
Would like direct boot though not important
Want to play on Live with actual game disc (this might be a problem as it will force a dash upgrade, correct?)

I could use some help wading through the plethora of options as well.  I just bought another xbox that was manufactored in June of 2003 (haven't even take it out of the plastic yet).  So, it should have versions that are plenty old enough to play nicely.

I have absolutely zero desire or need to play "backups" or whatever people are calling pirated games these days.  However, I would like the following:  to boot straight to evox.  I use gentoox and and mame so I would need that much.  Obviously, I'd want to be able to play the random game that I end up getting suckered into buying.

As of right now, I haven't ever logged into Live! and frankly, I don't see myself doing so, but I would like to have the option at some point in the future if something really compelling comes out.  I've looked over the posts that say:       No Dashboard access to the XBOX!Live console,   No XBOX!Live game access to the XBOX!Live console.
and, having never done anything with Live! I'm not sure exactly what that means.  Does that mean that you can't get on Live!, or just that there are certain things that you can't do?

From
"All these exploits have solutions to any disk swapping issue, thus can play homebrew media, and all allow playing of XBOX!Live games when booted from original media."
it looks like I probably shouldn't have any concerns, and I could just go with UDE and be happy.  Does that seem accurate?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Downgrading to boot Dashboard 4290 and using Bert is Cheating on Ernie sounds like just the ticket for your needs/configuration.

  • Pros:

    • Made specifically for Kernel 4034
    • Directing booting to Evox, etc,
    • Run unsigned code on your XBOX
    • therefore No need for PBL smile.gif - Hence no compatibility issues with Crimson Skies, etc.
    • Font also already contains the following runtime bios patches

      • F: Upgrade (means large HDD can now be used).
      • Media Flag checks.
      • EjectFix.

    • Can still use custom sound tracks in games (the M$ Dashboard can still be accessed from Evox)

  • Cons:

    • Risk of clock-loop. [info]

    • No Dashboard access to the XBOX!Live console.

would this work for K:4980 as well?  if not, is there something very similar that would?  while were talking about kernals, i have a noob question.  what exactly is the kernal version tied to?  the bios?

"Made specifically for Kernel 4034" - So, no, it won't work on K:4980.

PS. Kernels and BIOS are the same - the terms are used interchangeably.

lol... ok guys.. ill give you a challenge
i wanna know what i should run, im pretty picky
ok i have the original kernel 3XXX something v1 box running the 5659 dash
my main things are, i dont want clock loops(xbox is taken on trips), like ingame audio, like watching dvd's with the remote(my only dvd player), i dont mind finger dancing to start the exploit, and want to be able to run trainers and so forth (for halo). and if possible but not a must, not have to change my dash(just more of a possibility of me screwing up). thanx guys :jester:

oh.. i dont care if live cant be accessed, just as long as it's an easy fix... (for halo2)

ok, spent the morning on reading some more stuff and i think i got my questions answered. (i was happy to read i can try the ude:)

as an improvement for the exploit summary, imho it would be cool to add supported dashboard versions to the respective exploit?! just my two cents..

thanks anyway for that great summary!!
