Double dashboard exploit
« Reply #165 on: May 21, 2004, 11:10:00 AM »

Ok I am going to ask the dumb question as I searched and can't find it.  Couldn't those with the 5713 kernal, tsop flash to an older bios and kernal?

I have a feeling I am missing something but... I can't quite grasp it.

I'm just wondering.

Has it been proven that Reset on Eject cannot be turned off?

Probably not, if the kernel you speak of (have not been following what is in what) are in 1.6 Xboxs, the video encoder is different so my guess would be:

1. it would work.
2. no video would be displayed.

That is what I thought too, but I found a friends box was a 1.5 but had the 5713 kernal...

Ohhh well another one bits the dust.

A pretty good idea - the title ID in dashupdate.xbes is indeed different from 0xfffe0000. Unfortunately, they're not flagged HD-runnable, only DVD. Atleast that's the case with dashupdate.xbes I've got. That pretty much kills it. Allowed media can be checked using: xbedump dashupdate.xbe -dc. If there's no XBE_MEDIA_HDD in the output, then it won't do.

U missed the point...
Newer kernels are locked by the timestamp, but dashupdate.xbe is found on alot of newer games and is able to run on these new kernels.
The newer dashboards will generate error 21 if the fonts in C:\fonts are incorrect, but I don't believe they check the root fonts.
Sure, reset on eject will still need to be addressed, but this may work as a hybrid exploit for "unexploitable" boxes. (part game-save style, part font exploit)

With the ultimate dashboard exploit out the thread seems to almost be dead. I guess she's a piece of history now. Well, thanks to all that helped discover this exploit, create files/packages/tutorials, and answer questions. With out what we learned here we might not have made it to the Easter-Egg or UDE exploits.

I wish to second that.  Every idea and finding reported - good or bad - progressed the development.  beerchug.gif

(And in fact, I've a use for the DD exploit to restore the UDE wink.gif )

I hope for a ROE fix as well, but I don't see it anytime soon unless RMENHAL can wonder us again.

I still think this is a more versatile exploit than UDE as it retains almost all the functionality of the dashboard.

The advantage of UDE is that it can be set to directly launch without risk of clock loop and it is not subjected to ROE. But one lose the MS dashboard which can be useful in many situation.

I still prefer this exploit over others.  Gives control over the xbox where you want it.  Some people may prefer not to boot directly to an alternative dash (live myself) and also do not wish to use Live.  So unless your using live, this is a great alternative (from the audio exploit) that allows easy control over softmods.

I see it like this:

UDE: For people who want their replacement dash to boot automatically and don't use live
DD: For people who don't use live and like easy control over the launching of softmods.
Audio:  For people who use live.

All three have their own advantages over the others.

Plus Easter egg - for people who want
  • painless use of the latest MS Dashboard.
  • painless use of the latest XBOX!Live console.
  • and only play Homebrew infrequently.

It's a pity update.xbe looks in /fonts for the fonts.  Otherwise ROE would be solved here :S

Then again, there is probably still another ms signed file which has not been explored which will work still smile.gif  Just hope the interest stays with this exploit long enough for it to be found.
