Just fried my second xbox HD, both of them have been version 1.5 boxes...how, you may ask did i do it? Simple, hot-swapping, IDE drives are NOT designed to be swapped while powered...please be VERY CAREFUL when attempting this, it has and does work, but be forewarned, you can and will fry your drive/controller and also risk permanent damage to the controller on your actual PC using this technique...my solution, get a copy of AUF and use mordens package, seems to work great and i've had no problems even using it with a 5530 kernel...
