Xbox Won't Power On
« on: January 11, 2004, 09:40:00 AM »

I have an xbox that won't power on.  When I do, the fans spin for a sec, and then it just shuts down.

I have tested the fuse, and it tested good.  I have tried a know working power supply and that did not fix the problem.

Should I then assume that it is a motherboard problem?  I don't see any burnt spots on top of the board.  I have not taken the mb out to look at the botttom?

Any suggestions?  Thanks.

This is a version 1.0 UNmodded xbox.  I'm looking at it for a friend, so I don't know the exact history.

I know that it does not power on.  I know the the case was never opened before this no-power problem.  I am the first to open the case.  I wanted to check the fuse.  It tested fine with a multimeter.  I even put my working power supply in it and it would not power on, so I don't think the problem is with the power supply. (its a delta ps)

I sometimes get a quick green then orange led when i press the power button.  When I press the eject button, it turns green, but the drive never opens.

The fans spin up (on graphics chip and the vent fan), but then die when the power cuts off.  I can see no damage to the mb, but I've only looked on top.

i had a problem that was close to this.  What happened is I would press the power button, and it would turn on for a split second an turn of..but the light never changed.  I found the problem to be a bad PIC chip, but I only noticed that because there was a hole burned through it, lol.  This chip controls the power, dvd drive, etc.  It is towards the back of the mobo where you plug in the yellow cable for the dvd drive.  Runs horizontally with the LPC points and the TSOP.  Look at yours..see if it has a hole.  Eventually it quit runnging.  I just bought 2 brokem mobos from llamma and unsoldered the PIC off of one and onto mine.  Worked like a charm, I eventualy took the ram too...a nice upgrade.  Anyhow, goodluck.

Thanks for the response.  I'll have to take a look at that chip.  I guess I need a new mb.
