Well chameleon is not the way to go since it is not for sale.

I will suggest for someone that is new to xbox and wanting to mod theirs then it is easy with any xbox other than  1.6.

This is the best chip to date if you were to ask me.  I like it better than the x3 but the x3 has more stuff like lcd that I could careless about.  I just like turning on the xbox with a button held down to boot a bank or hitting eject to power xbox on and it powering retail bios and such.

Um, yeah. Any mod chip will let you play backups, emulators, etc. The differences between the chips are just bonus features that are nice to have, but not really neccessary. The Chameleon is very easy to install, since it has a solderless adapter and can be flashed from a bootable disc. I'm not sure if anybody is selling them anymore, since Xodus has moved on to their new chip, the Xenium.

i say if you can find a chameleon get one...they should be relatively cheap now, and if you can find one with a solderless adapter setup will be a breeze, only took me 10-15 mins to install...yes you can play on live, there is a software feature in evox which lets you disable the modchip and boot the tsop (original bios), so if your hdd is locked then yes you should be able to play live, software controlled flashing is a plus as well, so yes get a chameleon...

Big Peb, I have the Chameleon Mod chip. Install was easy but I'm stuck on flashing the bios. I have tried different medias and no lock. CD's and DVD's. Maybe I'm using the wrong bios file? Can you let me know the name of the file? Maybe my DVD drive on the x-box can't really read these medias? Is there a help file on this or can you please help me out or someone else. Thanks...this is my first post and of course I am a boob, I mean Noob.

Cromwell chameleon needed the file called bios.bin but I would use a brand new cd-rw and put other files on the cd-rw to make it over 300meg.   Put a topn of mp3's or something like that.

Imation seemed the best for me. but it really depends on your dvd drive.

I would stay away (very far away) from memorex.  Why?  They have the worst made cd-rw I have ever seen.  I have had more errors from a box of them than I ever had from all of the rest of my no names and name brands.

Thanks alot for your help. I really appreciate it. I have a version 1.0 xbox so I'm assuming that those DVD drives are more limited to the types of media that they read compared to the newer xboxes.
