More info:
The byte is both the LED colour
and sequence. The LED sequence appears to be 4 quarter second intervals (don't shoot me of I'm inaccurate here).
The byte is a bit pattern of in the form:

GGGG]
Hence:
10100000 = 0xA0 = (the B&E R original value) red LED on,off,on,off, no green LED
111111111 = 0xFF = Both red & green LEDs (hence Orange) for the whole second (ie. constant orange).
So,
0000
1111 = 0x0F No red LED, solid green LED.
