Cham V 1.0 Plays Dvds, But Not Games
« on: April 25, 2004, 12:23:00 PM »

so i have a v 1.0 box with a eb2k ;)  cham 1.8 that has been working for a few months just fine. It used to work with dvd region free playing non-retail dvds with no problems. It has worked with mod only games for a month or so, then it started to hang, then it would only work after i rebooted it a few times. Now it Evox does not recognise the disc at all, it just calls it "unknown".

So basically i've re-flashed the bios again with evox v7 ef, and re-installed all the apps from the slayer 2.5 disc.

Any ideas as to why the xbox has slowly lost the ability to read games and dvd's?

any helpful replies would be appreciated.

maybe bad dvd drive. Find a friend with a xbox and put taht dvd drive in your xbox. If games work then its because the dvd drive. If you have a thompson then most likely it is dvd problems.

yah, i know i posted this a long time ago, but i still have the problem,

drive is good, ive tried to swap it out w/ other dvd drives, no change.

FWIW, the chip flashes red all the time, and will not function in any other modes or banks than 0. anything else gets the triple reboot frag problem.

i've just re-booted it with slayer 2.5 and reflashed the bios off of the disc, as well as re-installed all the apps, but no success. Now the ability to play dvd's has gone out the window too. It still plays CDs but not mp3s as XBMP hangs on boot. (just says "loading" forever)

thoughts?

i've checked the D0 and A 15 and all appear to be in good shape. it's a soldered on cham.

Well first what kinda of media are you useing and can you play retail games.  I would venture this is a dvd problem since the mod chip does nothing to the dvd but exacute the xbe and if the xbe is not seen then it is a hardware problem and not a mod chip problem.  Just to make sure put the game on the hdd and run it off of that.  You will see the games will work on the hdd but not the dvd so point your fiunger at the dvd drive and not the chameleon.

thank, i'll give that another try, but it's happeing on my box and a buddies box that we did at the same time. one is a 1.0 the other a 1.3 both have slowly lost the ability to play games and dvds. by this i mean that they worked perfectly at first, then as time passed, they both lost the ability to paly the games, then lost the abilitly to play dvds, then locked up loading XBMP. Retail games work fine. if it's the dvd rom drive, then why would it hang while loading XBMP or other apps? the M$ CD player works without problem as well.

Well I am assumeing you mean XBMC and not MP I would get XBMC if you still use the XBMP.  The M7 and the X2 prioir 4980 bioses did lock up in XBMC and XBMP for me.  I have a version 1.0 xbox.  After I replaced the bios with x2 4980 the lockups stopped also.  It would lock up if I run boxexplorior and then hit the black button to return to evox.  About 1/2 secound later evox wold freeze.  I have since replaced m7 and x2 bioses on all banks.  I have found that the iND bios to be the most stable of all the bioses as of yet.

Reason that both xboses could have problem reading dvds that are burnt is the writer you are useing.  What speed are you burning at and more importaintly what media are you useing.  I have found that my older dvd writer that wrote dvd+r's and not the -r's had issues with the same media getting the xbox to read them where the dvd+&-r's dvd writer made the disc(s) readable.Plus I had to constanly write at 1x speed to get them to work at times.  Another issue I had was that I had gotten someting on the disc its self and had to clean my dvd player.  I finly got a new dvd drive off of ebay and now everything is tons better.  Philips works 100% of the time with dvd-r.  DVD+r is a whole nother storie.

well i've just upgraded my box (the 1.4) with slayer 2.6 via a complete wipe and rebuild, but still no luck. It now will play my dvd-r movies (same media as the games) but the games either don't come up at all, or it calls them "audio" FWIW, it doesn't have any free space on F drive, which i setup on the rebuild to exist.

i tried the jumper tests on my a 15 and D0 and they appear to all funtino correctly.

all i can say at this point is %@#$$@$^@!

and XBMP and XBMC both work now. Bios is M8 FC 06

Pls help!

Dude it has nothing to do with the bios or the programs you have installed it is just your dvd is going bad.  You will need to get another one from ebay.  Also you have dvd-r movies have you tried dvd-r games.  I know that once the dvd's start going bad they might read once in a while so if you really wanted to play the game it might take putting it in 50 times till the drive will read it correctly.
