has anyone else used this method with success ?

I really dont want to mess with the unlocking, locking etc - I'd much rather leave my stock drive as-is.

I'm gonna try this method first see how it goes. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work

ok I was able to dd the xbox drive to another pc, I had to pipe the dd thru scp, I tried with smbmount and i hit the 2gb filesize limit, but scp copied it fine

the final .raw was 7.54gb.. seems a little small?

I'm gonna try writing the raw image to a lockable 120 gb drive and lock it, see what happens

okay I can report 100% success on my first try

i installed the 120 gig into a windows pc and got the hard drive key from my xbox evox backup eeprom.bin, and liveinfo

I booted into gentoox on my xbox, and use a command like this (syntax may not be 100%)

dd if=/dev/hda | ssh 192.168.0.199 cat -> /home/xbox.raw

this piped the dd output thru SSH onto a pc running gentoo with the 120 gig drive installed into it

then i did a cat /home/xbox.raw > /dev/hdb (the 120 gig) and it dumped the hard image to the 120

i then booted that pc with a dos boot disk (actually a dos boot cd) and ran unlockx, locked it with my key, rebooted, verified it was locked. installed the drive in my xbox and it worked like a charm. PBL and evox loaded, I formated F: with evox and now I'm transferring gigs of fun stuff to my new drive!

this method is much easier and safer in my opinion, as you never have to take the xbox original drive out of the case until you are ready for the end result swap, never have to mess with locking or unlocking it or hot swapping

no reasion it wouldent work they use the same methed on other walkthrews but they unlock the stock hd and use xlinux to send the files over. witch is relly a unnessary step. your pc hd will work fine for sending the files over. and being the new hd isnt locked yet xlinux or dynebolic whont have a problem seeing it.

Hes right, it wont work. The only possiblity of it working is this. Windows server 2003 allows network install and the ive heard that you can just partion your drive remotely. Ill see if this is ture and get back to you guys.

its the same as any other tut like i said but your using xbox linux to make a img file of c: avoiding unlocking the stock hd. so it has been tested.

I used a similar method to install en new HD on my xbox using Linux.

First, I made a backup of my original HD using a linux launched on my a xbox, the dd command and a NFS share (but you can use SMB share of course). You can have some details on xbox-linux

Then, i "reverse" the operation for the new HD, and after locking it, my xbox worked fine with the new HD, hdprepar was not necessary 'cause i used raw access to the HD device.

I think it is probably the safest method to install a new HD without doing ANY operation on the original HD

there you go it works lol. and you right there this is probly the safest way to upgrade a hd couse if something whent horridly wrong with the new hd your stock one is ready to go. we all knoe the storrys of unlocking a stock hd then it whont relock. but using raw is also another nice way to do it but i dought anyone has 10 gigs free on there stock xbox hd so im gussing you ran the command and sent the image directly to the pc using nfs. thats a pretty slick move and defently would reduce my steps.

This guy can barely speak english. Following his tutorial would be a stupid thing. Anyone who says MUTCH instead of much, should not be listened to
