Yes, you can slap in a new HD using this tutorial - just needs to be cloned.  You can use whatever program you like for that, but I especially like norton ghost.

Even softmods will work - as that is what this tutorial is made for.  If your xbox has a modchip, just ignore the parts about locking the NEW hard drive.

Hi !    Very nice tutorial, I followed carefully every step but now I get an 6 on my original xbox HD and on my new HD.  Both are locked (checked under unlockx and atapwd, the 'L' flag is switched ON) and the jumpers are on cable select. I repeated several time the 16-20 steps but nothing helps...   What can I try now ?   uhh.gif

I've some questions :

1. What happend if I enter a wrong key while locking a HD ?
2. What happend if I reboot with an UNLOCKED HD ?

3. Can I screw ly xbox if I do 1. or 2. ?     unsure.gif

Thanks.

PS : I did 2. and now I'm unable to unlock any of my HD.  What can I do ?    mad.gif

I've searched through many xbox and security related forums during the last two days and it seems that a locked hdd without the password is totally unusable.  A big WARNING should be added in the intro section of the tutorial about this issue (I've read all available tutorials on softmod HDD upgrade available on this site and there NO WARNING about this).

A sentence like this would do the job :
"Hey before entering your lock password, triple check it !!! 'cause if there's a typo your brand new 120GB hdd is good for the trashcan !"

I've lost an IBM Deskstar 120 GXP while trying this tutorial and now I can only cry !   sad.gif

since you are at the step of locking the drive, which means you have already install every xbox require files for the replacement hard-drive to be like the exact same as the originals xbox hdd, then why don't you try and put it in your xbox to see if it booted up? if you can get it to boot up, use the evox backup option to find out your password...

and that's why you should use this UnlockX program instaed of the hddpreper or something becuase UnlockX save the locking password number that you enter...

but this tutorials is really long and hard, it is surely not for newbies biggrin.gifs... I have just follow what this tutorials said but i use unlockx instead of the hddpreper and it works fine...

Thanks for your answer bbjk  smile.gif , but I got an error 6 when booting with this new hdd.
The only way to make it work, is to unlock it and lock it again with a GOOD password.

I emailed IBM tech support about this issue, it seems that there's a MASTER PASSWORD available for that kind of problem.
I just hope they don't ask too many question ...  unsure.gif

I could use some help. I've followed the tutorial very closely.
When I first run Atapwd, this is what it shows:

S E  L  F  X V
+ + +  -  -  m
+ -   -  -  -

The Xbox drive has the letter 'm' underneath the V
and the new drive has a blank space under the V.

After doing step 12 (hdunlock xbox drive, hddinfo.txt key),
the L remains (+) for the xbox drive.

I stopped for now and don't want to proceed from here.
Any ideas?

Figured it out, I was using the wrong password key.
I used the one from c:backup when i should have used the one
in the udata backup folder.

All went smooth, now to format.
