How I Fixed My Clock Loop
« on: September 09, 2003, 01:42:00 PM »

Hello everyone!
This is my first time posting my findings on xb-scene forums, hopefully it'll help some people. I've found a way to fix the clock loop problem that I kept having with my font hack. I don't know if anyone else has discovered this yet, but here goes anyway.

LEGAL NOTE: You do this procedure at YOUR OWN RISK. It worked for me. It may not work for you. If you screw up your box, its NOT MY FAULT!

Now, here goes:

Things Needed:
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Hddunlock (Includes hdunlock, hddisabl, and hdlock)
UnlockX
hdd_driver
A GOOD hex editor
Windows Based Computer
Xbox Hard Drive (yes, you have to open the xbox)
The Hard Drive Key (See 'How do I get a Hard Drive key?' at the bottom of the page if you do not have it)

Method
--------------------------------------------------------
1. If you have Win XP/2000/NT, see part A, otherwise see part B
   a. Make a DOS boot disk (floppy). To do this, right-click the floppy drive in Explorer and select Format. Then check 'Create an MS-DOS Startup Disk' and hit Start. Once that's done copy the hdlock files and unlockx to the disk.
  b. Load all hdunlock files into 1 directory on the primary master hard drive

2. Turn off computer, attach the XBox Hard Drive as primary slave

3. Turn on, boot to dos (through boot disk for nt/xp/2000)

4. Run hdunlock and select drive 2. Then enter the hard drive key (format it like ab4c63d... etc, and leave the zeros on the end off)

5. Run hddisabl select drive 2, and enter the key again

6. Reboot into dos again

7. Run unlockX. If drive two says Lockable (Not Locked), it worked. Otherwise, repeat steps 3-7 until it does)

8. Reboot into Windows

9. Run hdd_driver, click okay when it says it found a drive, ignore all errors, go to the tools menu and select backup hdd.

10. Wait while it backs up

11. Close hdd_driver (Ctrl+alt+delete may be needed)

12. Open the file with your favorite hex editor

13. Go to this offset: 8EC59000

14. Change Xbox Book.xft to Xbox Book.xtf

15. Change Xbox.xft to Xbox.xtf

NOTE: If that offset doesn't show the xbox book.xft and xbox.xft, just search for xft in the hex editor. The offset should be right, however. (For a retail drive)

16. Save

17 Open hdd_driver again, click OK, ignore errors, this time select restore hdd

18. Load the file that you hex edited

19. Hit the system button, and begin the restore. Once that is done, see below

20. Boot to dos, run unlockx, use it to lock the drive. Then reboot to dos again and shutdown

21. Put back in xbox

22. MS Dash will now boot, allowing you to set the clock!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is a temproary fix. It WILL NOT stop it from happening again. This is intended as an emergency repair job. If you ever need to do it again, see the Repairing Again Section Below

23. Now you need to restore the font hack using whatever means you used to put it on the box? (Are you no longer able to restore the hack? See the I can no longer restore section below)

SPECIAL SITUATION GUIDES

How do I get a Hard Drive Key?
----------------------------------------------
Well, this gets tricky. Unless you have backed up your hard drive to your pc, you are screwed.
If you have backed it up, look for a file called hddinfo.txt (or something similar)
In that file, copy down the hdd key, without the colons, and no leading spaces:

Here is how you do it:
ab:45:c6
c4:89:34
would become
ab45c6c48934 (not actual key)
REMEMBER TO REMOVE ALL ZEROS AT THE END

I can no longer restore my font hack!!
----------------------------------------------------------
This is simple to handle.
Hex edit the two xtf files back to xft and restore the system partition again.
Do this after you have set the clock in the xbox.

Repairing Again
----------------------------------------------------------
Just make sure the file you backed up from the drive is still on ur comp, and restore the system partition. (As long as you haven't changed the file on your comp) This will set the system partition back to the last backup. Just run through the whole method again to keep the hd current.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, that's my method. I hope it helps people. Feel free to post ?s/comments/suggestions here. Please post your results if you have followed my method. I will try to refine this guide more in the future.
