Tutorial- Bigger Harddrive No Linux
« Reply #30 on: August 17, 2003, 02:43:00 PM »

I guess a moderator needs to see it. Its truly the best method to get a new hard drive ready. I did the steps today after solving some difficulties ( i don't have a disk drive , needed to burn a bootable CD heh ) and it worked just flawlessly.

The whole procedure of getting the new hard drive up and running took me less than a hour.

thank you so much for sharing.

So this tutorial will work with a xbox using the 007 or MA exploit?

You have to lock it on your computer with unlockx. And yes it works with the mem gamesave hacks. I might modify the tut later explaining how to lock and unlock.

is it absolutely necessary to clone the original xbox hard drive onto the new one and use unlockx?  i already have a 20gig installed on my xbox, and used configmagic to lock it.  it says it's locked, but when i try the font exploit and signed phoenix loader...all i get is "error 13"  i don't get what i'm doing wrong

I wish I had seen this post yesterday.  Then I wouldn't have wasted my time with HDD Driver and hdprepar.  Oh well, this is a great method and it's basically what I did last night (after you take out the extraneous steps I did).

The only difference was that I used Hex Workshop instead of WinHex to copy the sectors.  Same thing, pretty much.  Also, I copied it to my PC HD first, since it didn't occur to me to copy directly. >_<  The great thing about Hex Workshop (and probably WinHex) is that you can back up your HD in parts, to avoid the 4GB file limit in FAT32, if needed (I only have 10GB of NTFS space for WinXP).  Just copy 8 million sectors at a time (0-7999999, 8000000-15999999, etc.)  This is useful if you want to keep a backup of your original drive for some reason (but I'm going to erase mine).

I have one thing to add:

Tip: Whenever you connect your Xbox hard drives (new or old), you can go into your BIOS settings and disable the IDE channel for that drive.  WinHex/Hex Workshop and UnLockX will still be able to see the drives, and DOS/Windows will boot up A LOT faster.  Just remember to re-enable the channel (or set it to auto) later, if you have to.

jaxx, it's only necessary to use UnLockX if you don't have a modchip or haven't flashed the BIOS.  ConfigMagic should work, but if we can't run it in the first place (because the new drive isn't locked yet), then we have to use UnLockX.  I take it that you have a modchip and that you're enabling/disabling it.

First of all, you have to narrow down your problem:

- Does it show the Phoenix logo before the Error 13?  If so, then the HD is locked fine, and there is a problem with your font/PBL/BIOS setup.  If not, then the HD may not be locked properly, or PBL may not be set up properly.

- Remove the font exploit and restore your original xboxdash.xbe and .xtf files.  Disable the chip.  If this works, then you know for sure that the HD is locked properly.  If not, then it's probably not.  I'm not familiar with locking the drive using ConfigMagic, so I can't help you much beyond that.

sweet...thanks a lot Grospolina...finally a straight answer i can understand!  my drive was indeed locked after checking and i found out it was a problem with the dash.  i still had my media x menu dash set to xboxdash.xbe...that's why i was gettin that error.  i switched that to evoxdash.xbe and everything loads fine now.  my only problem now is that i'm having trouble signing the original MS dash to be compatible.  i used xvi32 to change all the XTF strings to XFT, then signed it with xbedump...but i still can't access it.  any ideas?

edit: also, which rom is packed with the signed phoenix bios loader?  the "xboxrom.bin"?  is it possible to use a blue color mod x2 4977?  how would i go about doing so?  thanks

I'm glad you got it working.  smile.gif

Let's start over with xboxdash.xbe.  Make a fresh copy of the original (let's call it msxbdash.xbe) and then use your hex editor to search for the hex values 7800740066.  This is the string "x.t.f", where the dots represent nulls, not periods.  Edit all instances to 7800660074, or "x.f.t".  Don't ever type any periods.  Save the file.

If you're loading PBL, then you don't need to sign it at all.  Otherwise, sign it with "xbedump msxbdash.xbe -font".  Delete msxbdash.xbe and rename out.xbe to msxbdash.xbe.

Make sure your original fonts are called Xbox.xft and Xbox Book.xft, and that they are in the right place (depends what xboxdash version you have).

Upload msxbdash.xbe to your Xbox and point MXM at it.  I haven't used MXM yet (that's my next task), but I think you can take it from there.

So lemme get this straight...

Basically, we're having three HDDs connected at once...

Primary Master: Your main PC's HDD (with the operating system) - which, in my case, would be WinXP.
Primary Slave: The new HDD you want to install in the Xbox.
Secondary Master: My CD-/DVD-ROM, I guess?
Secondary Slave: My current Xbox HDD.

So far, so good?

Now if I wanted to not hotswap, all I have to do is this:

1) Boot into DOS with DOS Boot CD (including unlockx)
2) Unlock current Xbox HDD with unlockx.
3) Reboot into WinXP.
4) Clone current Xbox HDD to new HDD I want to insall in Xbox.
5) Boot into DOS with same DOS Boot CD and lock the new HDD I want to install in Xbox with unlockx.

Now here's where my understanding breaks down:

a) Without a modchip, how do I configure Evox to format F:
cool.gif Should I format the new HDD first?  Right now it's a FAT32 partition with data on it.  I plan on clearing it off first, but how should I do this?  Does cloning within WinHex somehow format the HDD with the same file system as the source HDD?  I don't know much about WinHex's cloning function.

Not exactly.  UnLockX only works on drives on the primary IDE channel (master or slave), so you'll need to set the original HD as the primary slave to unlock it, and then clone it, and then set the new HD as the primary slave in order to lock it.

Then again, you COULD unlock the original HD with ConfigMagic first, but I wouldn't do that.  I'd want to know that UnLockX is able to unlock and lock the drive with the same key.

Also, remember to get the new key for the new HD from liveinfo (using your eeprom.bin).  You can't just lock it with the same key as your original.

When you clone it, it doesn't matter which channels the two HDs are on, although it would be better if they were on different cables (one primary and one secondary).  Just make doubly sure that you know which one is which.

Now, to answer your questions:

The new HD does not have to be formatted or partitioned/unpartitioned.  In fact, cloning the drive will destroy any formatting you do.  It copies the whole hard drive, sector by sector, so they will be (almost) one and the same.  The file system and all files will be copied over.  Unfortunately, anything on F: drive will be destroyed, since the drives are of different sizes.  F: drive is "the partition that includes ALL space after the first 8GB", and cloning it to a different size seems to corrupt it.   All you have to do is format it and it will be available for use.

There are several ways to format your F: drive:

1. Configure EvoX to include a "Format F:" item BEFORE you clone the drive, and make sure you're not running EvoX off F: drive.  Formatting tutorial

2. Make a MA/007 game save that boots EvoX and includes the "Format F:" command.  You can save it to E: drive before you clone, of after, if you have the tools.

3. Format F: using RAW commands over FTP.  Search the Exploit forums for this.

In all cases, make sure you have a way of getting into EvoX (or any FTP) after cloning the drive.  All drives except for F: will be available after cloning.

Okay, so, while I have you:

1) How do I add a format partition command in the evox.ini?  Specifically, what is the syntax to add it as a menu item?  I want to set it to format E:

2) Can I format E: while my Xbox is on and booted into Evox?  Do I actually need to save the E: partition first?  This is unrelated to installing the new HDD, of course.  It's a problem I'm having with phantom disk space and I'm hoping that reformatting E: will help.  If I have to save it because it has some system files or whatnot on it, may I do so by just copying all the files and directories to my PC via FTP?  I don't personally need anything (no saves, nothing) but from what I've read, everyone seems to indicate that backing up the E: drive is a must.

Thanks in advance.
