These forums are sounding more and more like the satellite hacking forums did a few years ago.
For anyone that was or is into satellite tv "testing", you know what I am talking about. For those who don't here is a quick summary:
Some very smart programers figured out a way to program a satellite access card to decode all channels using a script that was hidden on the card. These scripts were given to the public and posted on sites and forums exactly like this one. Everyone would download and install the scripts - enjoying the free programming until DTV would discover the exploit and send down a "death hit" in the broadcast stream that would disable all cards that were running these scripts. Everyone would lose tv programming. Days later, another script would be released. There were also private scripts that were not made public, but you basically had to know someone who could get you one and it would cost you some serious $$.
The forums and sites dedicated to this hobby were free, thriving communities(like this one) and this was how DTV would discover the scripts, and disable them. As more and more people go into the "hobby", the sites and forums were transitioning to pay only sites due to the huge amount of traffic that occured immediately after a death hit. Making it very hard for non-programmer types to get info and fix their cards so they could watch tv again.
Every few days or weeks, the public scripts would get killed and you would have to wait for days to get a new script because the sites containing the scripts would be locked to premium members only. It became a real pain in the ass.
This has been going on for years and has driven alot of people away from the "hobby", forcing them to pay for their tv programming.
As long as you connect to a subscription based service, you are vunerable to what ever is being done on the service. What makes this situation harder, is that the Xbox can be scanned by the service because of it's 2 way communication abilities. Satellite receivers are pretty much one-way(as long as you didn't hook up the phone jack in the back). As long as you don't connect to Live - you should be ok.
The idea of a new release containing code that could disable the xploits sounds very likely. I can see this happening with a very anticipated future release: Halo 2.
It's getting to the point where we may be forced to decide which is more important to us: continuing this hobby or playing live. Either that or we may be forced into having 2 separate Xboxs: one for modding and one virgin box for online play.
That's my 5 cents.
