I know what a spinnig hard drive sounds & feels like. It definitely isn't going powersave... Might have to go get myself a copy of mechassult from the bargain bin and use my improvised USB controller adapter to do this... grr.gif

Edit: My XBox's HD always has some background activity. I can hear it clicking. It just doesn't spin down.

I have the same problem.  I left the XBOX sitting for at least 45 minutes at the dashboard and the HD wouldn't stop.  I tried it at least 5 times.  My computer BIOS does detect the XBox HD.  The HD shows up in device manager in Windows 2000 but HDD Driver says that "I could find no xbox HDD".

Exact same problem here - everything else works fine, I just can't get into the MS Dash. Yes evox.ini is edited correctly - and yes, the I hexedited xboxdashe.xbe to remove the only instances of XTF (and yes, only one of the 4 options found anything when I searched).

Time for more reading and experimenting I think...

Do you have LIVE options on your dash (the original MSDash)?.

well interestingly I got this working, using a variety of 'tutorials'

K: 1.0 3944 original
D: 4920

used:  007 ->

bigfonts25
complete_signed_phoenix_loader.rar

I also edited the evox.init to point to the e: xbe like you said (should it be e: instead of e:)  however when I select "ms dashboard" from the evox menu, it just reboots to evox again

also when I put in a retail game, it did not reset when I hit the eject button, but it did not auto-boot the game, and "run dvd game" on menu was "red-out" and could not select it.  to run the game had to pick reset from evox menu

Is it safe to just FTP the files to the Xbox while running EvoX ftping to your pc?

I currently have a chip, but I plan on using this and taking out my chip.

The only problems I have had is with the ediiting of the dash. I did, just as I was told - changed the xtf's to xft's (without the checkbox checked) and then uploaded it to e:. But is doesn't work.

Sometimes it will just reboot, sometimes i will get the dash's green grid background but without anything on it. Any ideas? I checked the file on e: and i did not f*up the upload back the to xbox, it does not contain any more occurances of xtf.

Exact same problem here - everything else works fine, I just can't get into the MS Dash. Yes evox.ini is edited correctly - and yes, the I hexedited xboxdashe.xbe to remove the only instances of XTF (and yes, only one of the 4 options found anything when I searched).

Quoting myself... smile.gif

Fixed it all nicely - searched for xtf rather than XTF and replaced the 2 instances (each with letters seperated by that square box symbol) with xft.  Rebooted, launched MS Dash and it works perfectly.

Great work, I'll have to include the step of turning OFF case sensitivity on HEX edit search.  Thanks for the insite.

Can anyone tell me wich fonts are the best to use with Pheonix Bios Loader?

If you have a look around the board there are MANY threads dealing with this but as a guide i'll tell you that NONE of the ernie andbert releases are perfect.  It's bassiclly a personal preference situation.

If I am understanding you correctly this IS what you do annyway.

While I am currently a HUGE supporter of the SoftMod procedure (obviously) I dont see a point in removing your chip to apply the PhoenixLoader.  You have already gone down the path, no purpose doing it again for giggles.

Okay - stupid question time...  The whole continual clock resetting thing when you've left it unplugged for too long - am I right in thinking this happens because the EVOX boot doesn't let you set the clock yourself? (As in, you need to be in MS Dash to set it properly).

If so - and if I have the MS Dash booting fine - wouldn't setting the evox.ini lines:

[Clock]
JumpToMsDash   = No
JumpIfNoLink   = Yes

so that it kicks into MSDash just let me set it like normal?  Or does the reset thing not let you get that far?  (Too many topics on the reset with too much conflicting information elsewhere... so far this thread has been invaluable)

just a warning to everyone who uses this. if you leave the xbox unplugged for an extended period of time. (like over night) then your clock gets reset and your xbox won't boot. this just happened to me and I think I am screwed!

You should tell people NOT to change XTF only xtf cause if you do it doesn't work.
