10. TRANSFER all the files in the C folder (extracted from the signed phoenix bios loader.rar) to the X-Box C drive.

- what c folder? i dont have a c folder in my Complete_Signed_Phoenix_Bios_Loader.rar file.

11. COPY all the files from the "C" folder of the zip to the C Drive of the XBox.

- again what c folder? and what zip?? didnt point 10. just say to transfer all the files to 10??

Sorry I set up my Phoenix Loader files diffeently after I etracted them I forgot I had done so.  If you check back you will see the 2nd step was removed (it means the same thing, I must have typed it twice) and the other step was fixed to be correct.

I just transfered all the files and followed all other instructions but then I get the "xbox needs servicing message"

What OPTION did you choose? Memory Card, Action Replay or HDD Swap?

alcoholfuelled, I used the action replay method and installed pheonix bios loader option 2 (without a fonts folder). I am sure that I'm just overlooking something simple. one thing I do wonder about though is the xboxdash.xbe. I transfered the file to my computer and made the changes from XTF to XFT and then i transfered that file to the xbox e drive. the oringinal was still in c drive however could that be part of the problem?

Make sure you find the steps about editing the evox.ini file to look for the new dash.  It wasnt in the first tutorial, only this update.

No.  Make sure you have the latest bigfonts ernie and bert files and then re-run through each step to ensure you have done it correctly.

got it! just as I figured, it was a boneheaded mistake on my part.  the first time I transfered the entire pheonix folder all at once, including the nfo and readme txt. this time I just did one file at a time and it works! thank you for all your hard work alcoholfuelled.

EDIT: crap, now for some reason I can't connect with flashfxp.

(I am new to this stuff)

I found 2 kind of Phoenix Loader:
PhoenixBiosLoaderV1.1 that's 733K in size
and
Complete Signed Phoenix Bios Loader that's 1.7MB in size

Does it matter which one I use? Do you guys know the difference between the two?

Also, could you state in the tutorial about what Kernel version are known to work.

Thx, and AMAZING job on the tutorial btw.

use the signed version, it's all ready to go and setup, ready to be copied.

the other version has a bunch of stuff needed before it will work

When you reuploaded the files to the HDD did you make ure that the evox.ini file you were uploading was configured for your network settings?

The PhoenixBiosLoaderV1.1 is latest release on the PhoenixBiosLoader which includes a bunch of bug fixes that only some people experience.  If you have already installed PhoenixBiosLoader there is no need to update unless you are having problems such as the 'reboot on eject' bug.  The installaion is not you packaged completely so you will have to add other files to it.

My recommendation is that you just go with Complete Signed Phoenix Bios Loader.

Furthermore, I renamed the fonts (Properties for the item, and then changed the name, with HDD Driver crashing every time, but don't worry, it still works, just re-lauch it) in both the "Fonts" folder, and in the root of C (System), from "xtf" to "xft".
Then I put in bert and earnie from bigfonts.tgz in both the "Fonts" folder, and in the root.

This is un-necessary, like the tutorial says, you only have to rename the ones in the fonts folder and you only need to put the fonts there too.  Doing both sets won’t make a difference though, it's just a FYI.

Your 'unorthodox' method seems to have worked for you but I must stress to the newbie’s out there that you use something like this as a LAST RESSORT.  I myself have never tested such a procedure so I cannot confirm it.  You attempt something like this at your own risk.

Did you follow the earlier step of editing the evox.ini file to look to the e drive for the msdash?

My friend's xbox has a cheapmod with evo-x 3.6 bios. He install Phoenix Bios Loader v1.1 by this way:

1¡¢Copy the RC4 key from v1.0 boot.cfg to v1.1 boot.cfg.

2¡¢Transfer v1.1's boot.cfg, phoenix.raw, default.xbe and v1.0's xboxrom.bin to Xbox's c:phoenix.

3¡¢Add a link to evox.ini.

The v1.1 is the legal version, unsigned. It seems most of applications are ok, but found 2 cases:

1¡¢After run Phoenix then enter Evolution-X menu again, and still show the bios evo-x 3.6, but the kernel is ok: 1.00.4977.01. I assumed it showed bios x2 4977

2¡¢For games on harddisk, the IGR is functioned because the setting in evox.ini is correct. But for dvd games, can't use IGR function. Any idea?

Please confirm these 2 cases, bug or any method to solve them. Thank you.

I'm new here, so Hi guys!

Uh... also a n00b to XBox modding. I'm trying to use XBox HDD swap trick, but the XBox HDD never seems to spin down. I've tried about 5 times now, even left it on over night one. Anybody know why?!

it always makes noise, but when it spins it's a high pitched whine.

5 minutes is more than  enough, when the screensaver comes on it's definately not spinning anymore.

as soon as you unplug your ide cable you'll hear it start to spin, as it trys to reconnect, then you'll know what it sounds like.

Hey, this might help some people having a hard time getting the evox dash to load.
Make sure there are NO OTHER XTF FILES in your directory.

During an earlier attempt to install the phoenix loader I had renamed the xbox book abd xbox.xtf files to oldxboxbook.xtf and that messed it up.

So again.  MAKE SURE YOU HAVE NO OTHER XTF FILES IN THE SAME DIR AS YOUR OTHER XTF FILES

grr.gif

Edit: My XBox's HD always has some background activity. I can hear it clicking. It just doesn't spin down. I tried to changeover the cable with it running, but both of the machines I tried to plug it into (Kt400 & NForce2, just to prove it wasn't the specific configuration/IDE controller) froze up for a while on drive detection, detected both drives successfully and failed to detect a boot device after the POST...

QUOTE (rover @ Jul 25 2003, 09:32 AM)
The only problems I have had is with the ediiting of the dash. I did, just as I was told - changed the xtf's to xft's (without the checkbox checked) and then uploaded it to e:. But is doesn't work.

Sometimes it will just reboot, sometimes i will get the dash's green grid background but without anything on it. Any ideas? I checked the file on e: and i did not f*up the upload back the to xbox, it does not contain any more occurances of xtf.

Exact same problem here - everything else works fine, I just can't get into the MS Dash. Yes evox.ini is edited correctly - and yes, the I hexedited xboxdashe.xbe to remove the only instances of XTF (and yes, only one of the 4 options found anything when I searched).

Time for more reading and experimenting I think...
