Ok, I did everything in the tut, I use the font exploit. I had to BRFR the HD because hdddriver didnt detect it. I locked the HDD with the key that live info gave me (calculated password of the new hdd) but when I put it in the xbox, I get error 06.... whats wrong? do I have to take the key from the .txt of the backup? or the one from the eeprom?

now u need to use hddisabl.exe... do the same as above it will ask for the password again... moments later... Done... use atapwd again.. and now the E has a '-' sign under it also... we want this to happen 'cause when you reboot your PC... we don't want the HDD to be locked again.. that's why you disable it from locking...

SELFXV

how do you reenable your hard drive (where E has a '+' sign under it)?  or is this even necessary?

answer: hdlock does this.

btw the HDDdriver back up took me 9 minutes. I had 3 games and xbox media player installed on it already with a ton of games.  Athlon 1 Ghz with 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD.  Total size of backup "xbox.bin" 7.45 GB

On reboot with bigger hard drive connected for restore HDDriver does not see an XBOX hard drive

"Bad News. I could find No XBOX HDD. I searched from .Physical Device 0 to Physical Device 256"

what did I do wrong?

If I do not Press OK to this message I can go to Tools > Restore.
I get a "failed geometry" message. I pressed OK.
It then sent me to a Restore option page with serveral options.  I chose "Entire Drive"

It took about 5 minutes to finish. And then said "changes to directory structure will not take place until next reboot"

hope it did the correct drive  blink.gif

ran hdlock ONE TIME to get '+' under E
SELFXV

do I have to run hdlock again to get '+' under L

Ok before  I sew it up.

Maxtor 80.0 GB
D540X-4K

Maxtor P/N: MX4K080H4

turned on xbox and get  error 07.

I looked up Error 07 and it says "HDD Time out"

Xbox Errors

does anyone know where I went wrong or how to fix this?

dude come on. what do you think, really? think about it...anything in this process not go as planned? anything?

that's right, HDD_DRiver never recognized your drive, therefore your restore never worked. "Failed Geometry" is not a good message to get. it seems pretty obvious to me that your unlock did not work.

anyways..enough bustin your balls, what this tutorial forgot to point out is that you need to use hdunlock twice before it works. only then can you use hddisable to disable your HD. another option is use unlockX which does both these things in the same step.

- Double and triple check your password.
- CHeck the password that is automatically saved on the floppy disc and compare, did you lock it with the wrong code?
-  Make sure when using LiveInfo to get the password you load the EEPROM  before selecting your harddrive and writing down the password
- Make sure you disable the drive and it worked, L and E should both have '-' under them or something's wrong

next time, make sure the drive is locked before booting windows, after you unlock and reboot, run atapwd one more time and double check. although if the E had a '-' under it after unlock then you know it's ok.

and i'd like to retract my statements about this tutorial being better, after actually doing the process, the other no-linux one is much better.

To get HDdriver to recognize your new replacement drive, u will need to edit offset 1536 -1539 with "BRFR"
I too was trying to get HDdriver to restore a backup but it just wouldn't recognize the new drive. Looked at the oem xbox drive and saw that BRFR (as mentioned in TOOGG.doc) is located at x1536 not x600. You may want to do a search on your xbox drive and see if BRFR is at 1536 or elsewhere.

My Xbox is v1.0 purchased Dec 01. This may or may not work for you and as always I take no responsibilty if u fuck up.

laters.

qoute from liu511

now I just need to know what BRFR is and how to do what is mentioned above

BRFR reference
QUOTE
8- Ok, now you can unplug the xbox hdd from your pc
9- Open Winhex and Open your new disk in it
10- Go to offset 0x600 and write BRFR (at the right), so HHD Drive will think that is a real Xbox HDD
11- Open HDD Driver, It should be detect your new drive as an Xbox HDD
12- Click on ToolsRestore and restore the Entire Drive with the backup.bin image

ok so I went to www.google.com and got WinHex.  Installed it.

OK. In order to save edits on your harddrive you have to buy the program and register it

I will go back to the HDDriver restore and try to get it to recognize my hard drive.

It does after doing the winhex fix BRFR at 0x600 to the hard drive.

HDDriver recognized my hard drive. I restored my backup to the new hard drive. ran hdlock.exe ONCE.

then I checked it with atapwd.
there was a '+' E

I still get error 07

thanks for your help and patience

can you please edit your post up top and add a link to the other no linux method?

ok, well if your drive was unlocked and you're positive it was unlocked, then you should try using winhex, it has a clone disc function that can use your hd_driver backup and restore it. no need for hd prepare or any of that crap

also i THINK it's possible to lock it with the wrong code, not positive though, check the floppy, whatever code you used last will be backed up there

I'm an idiot. Can someone tell me how I would know if a hard drive is lockable? or can some people post the hard drives they have used that were successful.

now I just need to know what BRFR is and how to do what is mentioned above

The clarity of these forums isn't always spot on.

If after you use HDPrepare, and HDDriver doesn't detect your new HD, you gotta do the following:

You need to go into a hex editor (I used winhex), and edit your new HD that you will soon be putting into the Xbox.

At 0x600, type in 'BRFR' (no quotes). Save your changes.

Now try HDPrepare. It should recognize it now.

This is what has been killing me all today, and finally worked.

Obviously, if you have the ability to hook up both drives (xbox and new hd) along with the HD holding your OS, you can just do a disk clone in winhex. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option for me, so I did the above.

Let us know if you're okay!

there's a list kicken around, it''s a bitch to find. there's also like a 30 page thread if you feel like wading through it.

easy way to tell if your drive is lockaable is download atapwd, run a DOS boot disk, once in dos run atapwd of the same floppy, you'll see your drives, on the right it says SELFX, if there's a '-' or '+' under E, L and F it's lockable.

you don't need to connect all three drives, you just make a backup with HD Driver then use that image in clone disk, worked for me.

the other no-linix tut is exaclty that, you clone disk with all 3 plugged in using winHEx.

BTW, there's no point in using winhex instead of hd_driver to make a backup. HDD_Driver makes identical backups as Winhex.

I'm thinking you may have locked it with the wrong password?

thanks for the heads up on the BRFR.  I had tried that. but I did not RERUN hdprepare.

I wasnt aware that I needed to rerun it. I just ran HDDriver and it found the HD.

the reason you run hd prepare in the first place is so HDD_Driver will recognize it, so obviously it works without re-running it
