Refining The Font Exploit
« on: July 14, 2003, 08:27:00 AM »

I think the exploits, to be 'perfect' should patch the name of the dashboard used.

Then the exploit only needs to boot once on power up, and it would immediately REBOOT after patching the BIOS to boot the alternate dashboard - as a dashboard. Thus solving the clock issue once and for all.

The font method could possibly use the plugin technology of Loader, or embed the code to patch each kernel out there, and also patch the name of the dashboard inthe kernel to "yboxdash.xbe" or something else  generic as an alternative. The user could then simply have evo-x, mxm, avalaunch, or a hacked xboxdash as the alternative dashboard... which would be directly loaded by the BIOS until a power cycle.

There's no reason why this wouldn't be an elegant, ideal solution to the problems.

xdreamer thanks for the explanation in the other thread.

On my system I can easily tell if the clock-reset thread is active and the dashboard wants to set the clock because of the brief animation before evox loads (I think it is the clock zoomin in). As soon as I set the clock in my modified dashboard (which uses xft extension), or let evox do it via time-server (plugging ethernet cable in) I no longer see the animation. This is with bert and ernie reloaded.

Because of what I said above, using the new bert and ernie reloaded which sets the time to July 4th does not appear to make the dashboard stop wanting to set the clock on subsequent reboots. They could probably take this feature out but it is probably nicer to have a date closer to the present rather than some random one.

FYI, on my latest 4920 dash I changed the xtf in the fonts folder and left the ones alone in the root of C:. Maybe this has something to do with reboot problem others are having.
